Splashed!

Design creates culture. Culture shapes values. Values determine the future -R. Peters

I am secretly obsessed with creative minds. As a child, I would always make up stories to help me wash dishes or to help me cope with bullying or just to make the time go by. I had this imaginary life inside my mind that kept me sane. So, I grew up loving movies, story-telling, books, fashion and design. Pretty much anything aesthetically pleasing, I was drawn to immediately. How many of you are like that?

My goal, and the goal of House of Odara is to first motivate, next bring affordable fashion, also highlight fashionable people and finally spotlight designers and their visions. Today, this post is about this brand I stumbled on to called Splashed by DKGThe designers are actually my upstairs neighbors and the CEO’s of Magic City Fashion Week. Derek and Daniel design, sew and splash all their pieces themselves. I fell in love with their dream, work ethic and of course the designs themselves.

Today, I’m styling their tiered top (NOW ON SALE). This top fits just about anyone, from petite to plus size so check out their page and shop away. I paired this gorgeous top with a chocker from their collection, a red wrap skirt, tortoise shelled sunnies and strappy blue heels. I absolutely loved this shirt, it was comfortable, flattering and the color is just amazing. Let’s support local businesses that are doing.

CLICK PICTURES TO SHOP

I absolutely love the splashed design of the shirt, the off shoulder look, the light weight feel of the cotton and of course the compliments I received while wearing it. The shirt would also go well with white-washed jeans or tights. The beauty of style is that you get to make things your own. So, go shop and style it your own way.

Let me know what you think of this look and how you would have styled it differently. Check out the site Splashed by DKG  for the top and other fabulous items. Don’t forget to comment, subscribe and share this site. For collaborations with your brand, email me at Houseofodarablog@gmail.com

Konnichiwa

Konnichiwa Friends…

or better yet, Good day. It’s FRIYAY and the weekend begins. I am keeping this post really short and simple because this outfit is just that, sweet and simple. I found this gorgeous “Japanese” inspired kimono on my favorite site Amazon and I dreamed about it until I finally saved up my coins to purchase it on Prime Day. I’m thinking about doing video reviews of the items I get from Amazon and other sites, what do you guy think about that?!

So, the Kimono came in two days (Prime) and it was perfection. FYI Amazon prime is offering 30 day free trials for those who want to take advantage of two day shipping and free shipping and handling. Click Here for the offer. The robe/kimono was silky, belted and the color was amazing. I actually hosted one of my friends plays in this very outfit. I got so many compliments and inquiries about the kimono that I decided I had to blog it. The beauty of this piece is that it’s so in season right now. Celebrities have been wearing the kimono/trench look all summer long. Beyonce’s Gucci kimono cost a whopping $21,945….I found mine on Amazon for less than $25.00

So these stars may have spent a fortune on their Kimonos, but you can get the same floral look for WAY LESS.

I paired this look with some simple distressed light jeans, a yellow Giani Binni blouse, Amazon gladiator heeled sandals and some gorgeous tassel earrings also from Amazon. CLICK ON PICTURES TO GO DIRECTLY TO THE SITE.

Let me know your thoughts on the whole kimono trend…whether you like it or not, and why. I love it because it’s so lightweight, I can wear it during the summer and also use it to cover up some too tight jeans and my juicy, juicy arms…lol!

These pics were taken at Aldridge Gardens in Hoover, AL. This place is absolutely gorgeous. You can look below for some pics from the spot!

Fuchsia.Passion

A strong and barely controllable emotion” is what webster defines as PASSION!

We all have once had a passion for something. Whether it was playing basketball, being an actor, being a doctor, being a lawyer, or being a singer, passion would keep us up at night and keep us dreaming during the day. Well, along the way, passion fizzles out. Life comes in and waters down the fire of passion and with time, we forget, we lose sight, and we move on. Now, it’s time to pick up those passions friends.

Remember, you don’t have to quit your life, your job, your day-to-day activities to pursue passion. You just have to find time to carve you a space for you and a space to pursue your passion. You can do it. Let me know what passions you have given up on and how you decide to pick it up and make those dreams a reality. The difference between dreams and reality is You. You make the dream work, so get out and work!

This look is my Fuchsia Passion. I found this gorgeous dress at the Ghetto Dillards (Dillard’s Outlet in Eastdale Mall). Being a new mommy, my arms are just not where I want them to be so I paired the dress with a stripped off-shoulder blouse, a folded faux-leather bag and black and white heels. This look is perfect for that special occasion. I have linked sites where you can buy that perfect evening outfit so check them out and tag me on IG: Oluwafunmifly  or FB: Houseofodara if you recreate this look. Don’t forget to comment and let me know what you think. Also, let me know what other looks you want to see and ask any questions you may have.

Hello, my name is Emmanuella Oluwafunmilayo Searcy Ford and I am addicted to Amazon

Okay, in this day and age, a lot of people know how utterly BOMB Amazon is and how it makes the world go round. The best feeling in this world, beside my babies kisses, oh and my husbands…lol, is getting that box with a smiley face on the side on my doorstep. Amazon, oh Amazon, how do I loveth thee (Amazon 3:12).

Here’s the thing, If you’ve never purchased anything from the site, it can be really intimidating. My first time, I was so afraid the clothes wouldn’t fit and then I would just be stuck with something I didn’t like or something with horrible quality. Well, This post is for those who are Amazon virgins or have been burned by Amazon before and have given up. I am going to give you five easy steps on how to become Amazon-literate. First, of course, get an Amazon account. Better yet, sign up for an Amazon Prime account and let the shopping begin.

  • Always Always read the reviews: these are always found at the bottom of the page after you see the products. Just keep scrolling down and go past the recommended listings, the size charts and then you will find the reviews. You can see what actual buyers said about the products and some even put up pictures of them in the items. I always try and write a review every time I buy something. If it doesn’t have a review, buy at your own risk. FYI always make sure the positive outweighs the negative comments.
  • Be Specific: when typing in what you want into the search box, be as specific as possible. If it’s a coconut purse you’re looking for, make sure you type exactly that. For example, put in “Yellow coconut bag” or “White button down long sleeve shirt”
  • Check Sizing Chart: Okay, some of these sellers will be Chinese sellers or sellers from out of the country and their
sizing charts are always different. Chinese sellers always run smaller and not true to size so be careful. Right next to the place where you pick your size, they have a size chart that should have chest and waist dimension if it’s a shirt and other dimensions for pants or jeans. Always look at the sizing charts and again read the reviews. People will let you know if the items are true to U.S. size.
  • Discover Prime: Okay, Amazon has this great program called Prime. It’s a yearly membership that allows you to get the items with 2-day shipping. Man, last Christmas I had a field day last minute shopping. If you can afford it, Prime is the way to go. Prime accounts users don’t have to pay shipping and handling and you return things for free and again, two-day shipping.
  • Explore Amazon: Lastly, take time out and explore this marketplace. Just go in and put things into your shopping cart and type different items you would like to have and stare them into reality…LOL. Amazon notifies you if anything in your cart has gone down in price, so sleep and pray on those purchases. FYI Amazon just started a new program where you can try clothes out before you actually purchase it. With anything on Amazon you can always return the items and get your money back. They will send you the shipping label  and all you have to do is print it and take it to your nearest USPS. Amazon has made shopping so easy, you’ll actually enjoy it.

FYI July 11th is Amazon Prime day and it’s like Black Friday for the cyber world….aaahhhh. You have to be a Prime member to get these deals but you can sign up for a free trial offer and take part of the epic savings. I encourage you guys to take time out and explore what Amazon has to offer. I am putting a couple of hot items for the summer that is on my wish list so far or that i’ve already purchased. You will love the items. Click on the pictures and it will take you directly to the Amazon page:

These are all great summer looks that are under $50.00. Let me know if and when you decide to give Amazon a try and if these tips helped you at all. If you are looking for anything specific and want help searching, email me @funmis1@gmail.com and i’ll def help look and send you links. I’ll also do this again for the fall/winter and put some on trend looks for the season. Hey, should I do a similar post for the fellas? Let me know. Happy shopping loves.

AdaChicDesigns Launch Party

Dreams!

Dreams are funny things. They may wake you up at night, they may keep you up at night. Sometimes they make you cry, laugh or wake up feeling scared. Dreams are funny things. No matter who you are or where you are in life, you’ve had a dream; an seemingly impossible dream that you keep telling yourself you will fulfill “one day.” Listen Linda, it doesn’t matter if you don’t have any money , no bright ideas, or all that weight off, JUST DO IT!

This blog post is about a new bag designer that went to Africa one time and came back home and decided to make her dreams a reality. She did her homework and in a matter of months, she created Adachicdesigns. Her line caters to the woman that is hard working, fearless and unafraid to shine. I was able to be a part of her launch on June 25, 2017 and let me tell you, this lady knows how to throw a viewing party. The food was impeccable, the venue was immaculate and the ambiance was sophisticated. To top it off, the bags were complete showstoppers. Gorgeous, to say the least. I was given the opportunity  to style the beautiful “Celebration Bag” for this blog.

If you want to know more about the company, visit their site: www.adachicdesigns.com and the bags can be purchased on her Easy page: HERE

Let me know what you think about the bags and the styling!

A Stripped Affaire

Mixing colors and patterns is fun!

But, It has to be done right. My little niece loves to do this–she puts on everything she can find in her closet and wants to walk out the door with a huge smile on her face. She’ll put on neon tights with a floral dress, add a stripped jacket and twirl around like the cutest thing on planet earth. I sometimes laugh at what she has on because she’s so young, she doesn’t realize that even though they look cute individually, together they are a hot mess. Still, mixing prints and colors can be really awesome when done the right way. I decided to tackle this look in this new post.

I purchased this Gianni Bini stripped romper from Dillard’s and found a beautiful stripped Nine West bag to compliment it. The bag looks good next to the stripes on the romper and the colors look great together. I put a blue fluff keychain on it and tied it all together with a pair of thigh-high boots. The colors not only compliment each other, but help pull each other out. I really love this simple look. What are your thoughts?

Let me know how you like to mix colors and patterns and If you want to recreate this look, tag me in it on Facebook: Emma Ford or Instagram: Oluwafunmifly. I cannot wait to see all your looks.

Have a great weekend Lovies. Love you, Mean it!

It’s All In The Jeans

Jeans are a hard thing to wear. How many ladies agree with me on this?

Okay, so they’re either super tight on your legs and hips or too big around your waist. Finding the perfect pair of jeans is like finding the perfect man. But, when you find that one that makes you look slimmer, taller and more confident at the same time, you buy more than one of them. Everyone has their favorite brand of jeans and their go-to store to purchase them.

My favorite jeans right now are skinny distressed jeans. I’m not into wide-leg or bell-bottom jeans; they never look right on me. The moment I find a pair of jeans with a tapered leg and elasticity, i’m a happy girl. I found the pair i’m wearing at Ross Dress For Less. I paired it with a vintage color-block jacket and a pair of color-block Sam Edelman booties and a snake-skin leather Elliott Lucca clutch. The Lucca bag is sold out, but there is this great site called Postmark that you can sell gently used clothing, shoes, bags, etc. I have the link for this beautiful bag down below for 50% less than the retail price.

If you know any great places to buy well-fitting jeans, let us know in the comment section. Also, let us know how you  like to wear your jeans. BTW don’t forget Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Maybe you can get her a pair of great fitting jeans.

Love you…Mean It.

Blue Vibes

How are your goals coming along so far?

It’s only January so don’t worry if you haven’t begun yet, but Please, Please begin. I’ve not been posting as much because I’ve been in the process of looking for a new job and opportunity in my new city of Birmingham, AL. Send up a prayer when you think of me.

Otherwise, I’ve been enjoying my new city a lot. I live in Hoover and right across from the Galleria Mall. l finally did my first shoot here in the city and I am in love with this little spot called Vulcan Park. It has great views and literally overlooks the entire city.

I paired my LBD (Little Blue Dress) with a tan trench and tan thigh-high boots. I absolutely love this look. It’s effortless and great for a night out on the town or a day out with the girls. The dress itself can be worn in so many different ways and is very flattering for any shape.

Let me know what you think about this look and how you would have worn it differently.

Forever 21

Where all my petite girls at?!

LOL. Okay, so i’m short, big deal. I’m actually 4’ll and 5’1 on good days. But, in my heart and soul, I’m a 5’11 Amazonian Goddess. In real life, I have to find ways to make myself look as tall as possible. Life is all about taking the little negatives in your life and dealing with them the best way you can.

So, when I went into Forever21 and found these gorgeous stripped trousers, I bought them right away. The vertical stripes elongates my legs and makes me look at least 2 inches taller and 5lbs smaller (Look at God)!

Let us know some of the tricks you use to help you look taller or thinner.

You’re Going Somewhere!

So, it’s 2016.

We have exactly 360 days left in this year. What goals have you set for yourself?

A map can show you where to go, but unless you get in the car and drive, your destination will always just be a dream.

r-CROSSROADS-large570Think about it, when you make a decision to take a road trip with the girls you always have a plan of action and you are prepared to execute it. The weeks leading up to the trip you spend time calculating how much everything is going to cost, you develop an itinerary, and you decide what you will be wearing…duhhh. All this preparation allows you to enjoy the trip. And even if you run into bumps in the road during the trip, you’re able to roll with the punches and know what to do and not to do for next time.

The same mindset we take with trips is the same mindset that you must take with the goals you set and achieve for 2016. Lets face it, we are on a journey called life and we only get one chance at it. So remember that no matter how many obstacles you have faced and how many times you have been knocked down, its time to get back up.

So lets cut to the chase! How do you set goals and achieve goals? Here are some tips I’ve picked up along the way that have helped me stay on track.

hands-holding-letters-tips-500px

1.) Decide what it is you want in life. Remember no one knows you better than you do. Don’t make the decision based on what sounds good, but instead what you are passionate about. Start dreaming again!

2.) Focus. No one can do too many things at once, it’s the same with setting goals. You have to prioritize. Start by thinking about the important areas of your life you want to achieve something in. For example I always break mine down into categories physical, financial, spiritual, and so forth. From there I brainstorm specific goals in each area I would like to achieve. You don’t want to get overwhelmed, so I suggest selecting only 3 goals for each category you choose. Remember You can always add on to your list. All your goals need to be SMART!
S – Specific (or Significant).
M – Measurable (or Meaningful).
A – Attainable (or Action-Oriented).
R – Relevant (or Rewarding).
T – Time-bound (or Trackable).

3.) WRITE IT DOWN. I can’t say it enough. Get your pen and paper and get to writing. This is important because you will definitely need to go back and look at it.

4.) “If you fail to plan you plan to fail.” Develop a plan of action. A genie in a bottle isn’t going to be granting any of your wishes anytime soon, so girl you got to work. You have to know where in the world you are going. Nothing happens overnight. You want to lose 50 pounds you need a plan. Are you going to get a gym membership? Or will you have a personal trainer? How many times will you workout each week? Are you cutting out sweets? Having a plan allows you to not wander aimlessly.

5.) Don’t let your goals collect dust. Find time to review them periodically. I remember every year I would set goals and make a plan, but when I would review it every month it made it real again. My eyes stayed on the prize. So every too weeks or even monthly pull it out and see where you are at in your progress.

6.) Accountability. Share your goals with a person you trust. I believe this will help in those times you get distracted or discouraged. Having someone there that has your best interest at heart and desires you to succeed is vital. They will serve to both encourage and challenge you to stay the course and finish the race.

These are only a few tips on how to set and achieve your goals. Throughout the process stay positive and remember failure is only final when you allow it to be. Become committed to making you the best you. If you take these steps, you cannot help but succeed. No matter what your dream is, you can achieve it.
