A Stripped Affaire

Mixing colors and patterns is fun!

But, It has to be done right. My little niece loves to do this–she puts on everything she can find in her closet and wants to walk out the door with a huge smile on her face. She’ll put on neon tights with a floral dress, add a stripped jacket and twirl around like the cutest thing on planet earth. I sometimes laugh at what she has on because she’s so young, she doesn’t realize that even though they look cute individually, together they are a hot mess. Still, mixing prints and colors can be really awesome when done the right way. I decided to tackle this look in this new post.

I purchased this Gianni Bini stripped romper from Dillard’s and found a beautiful stripped Nine West bag to compliment it. The bag looks good next to the stripes on the romper and the colors look great together. I put a blue fluff keychain on it and tied it all together with a pair of thigh-high boots. The colors not only compliment each other, but help pull each other out. I really love this simple look. What are your thoughts?

Let me know how you like to mix colors and patterns and If you want to recreate this look, tag me in it on Facebook: Emma Ford or Instagram: Oluwafunmifly. I cannot wait to see all your looks.

Have a great weekend Lovies. Love you, Mean it!

It’s All In The Jeans

Jeans are a hard thing to wear. How many ladies agree with me on this?

Okay, so they’re either super tight on your legs and hips or too big around your waist. Finding the perfect pair of jeans is like finding the perfect man. But, when you find that one that makes you look slimmer, taller and more confident at the same time, you buy more than one of them. Everyone has their favorite brand of jeans and their go-to store to purchase them.

My favorite jeans right now are skinny distressed jeans. I’m not into wide-leg or bell-bottom jeans; they never look right on me. The moment I find a pair of jeans with a tapered leg and elasticity, i’m a happy girl. I found the pair i’m wearing at Ross Dress For Less. I paired it with a vintage color-block jacket and a pair of color-block Sam Edelman booties and a snake-skin leather Elliott Lucca clutch. The Lucca bag is sold out, but there is this great site called Postmark that you can sell gently used clothing, shoes, bags, etc. I have the link for this beautiful bag down below for 50% less than the retail price.

If you know any great places to buy well-fitting jeans, let us know in the comment section. Also, let us know how you  like to wear your jeans. BTW don’t forget Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Maybe you can get her a pair of great fitting jeans.

Love you…Mean It.

Blue Vibes

How are your goals coming along so far?

It’s only January so don’t worry if you haven’t begun yet, but Please, Please begin. I’ve not been posting as much because I’ve been in the process of looking for a new job and opportunity in my new city of Birmingham, AL. Send up a prayer when you think of me.

Otherwise, I’ve been enjoying my new city a lot. I live in Hoover and right across from the Galleria Mall. l finally did my first shoot here in the city and I am in love with this little spot called Vulcan Park. It has great views and literally overlooks the entire city.

I paired my LBD (Little Blue Dress) with a tan trench and tan thigh-high boots. I absolutely love this look. It’s effortless and great for a night out on the town or a day out with the girls. The dress itself can be worn in so many different ways and is very flattering for any shape.

Let me know what you think about this look and how you would have worn it differently.

Where all my petite girls at?!

LOL. Okay, so i’m short, big deal. I’m actually 4’ll and 5’1 on good days. But, in my heart and soul, I’m a 5’11 Amazonian Goddess. In real life, I have to find ways to make myself look as tall as possible. Life is all about taking the little negatives in your life and dealing with them the best way you can.

So, when I went into Forever21 and found these gorgeous stripped trousers, I bought them right away. The vertical stripes elongates my legs and makes me look at least 2 inches taller and 5lbs smaller (Look at God)!

Let us know some of the tricks you use to help you look taller or thinner.

You’re Going Somewhere!

So, it’s 2016.

We have exactly 360 days left in this year. What goals have you set for yourself?

A map can show you where to go, but unless you get in the car and drive, your destination will always just be a dream.

r-CROSSROADS-large570Think about it, when you make a decision to take a road trip with the girls you always have a plan of action and you are prepared to execute it. The weeks leading up to the trip you spend time calculating how much everything is going to cost, you develop an itinerary, and you decide what you will be wearing…duhhh. All this preparation allows you to enjoy the trip. And even if you run into bumps in the road during the trip, you’re able to roll with the punches and know what to do and not to do for next time.

The same mindset we take with trips is the same mindset that you must take with the goals you set and achieve for 2016. Lets face it, we are on a journey called life and we only get one chance at it. So remember that no matter how many obstacles you have faced and how many times you have been knocked down, its time to get back up.

So lets cut to the chase! How do you set goals and achieve goals? Here are some tips I’ve picked up along the way that have helped me stay on track.

hands-holding-letters-tips-500px

1.) Decide what it is you want in life. Remember no one knows you better than you do. Don’t make the decision based on what sounds good, but instead what you are passionate about. Start dreaming again!

2.) Focus. No one can do too many things at once, it’s the same with setting goals. You have to prioritize. Start by thinking about the important areas of your life you want to achieve something in. For example I always break mine down into categories physical, financial, spiritual, and so forth. From there I brainstorm specific goals in each area I would like to achieve. You don’t want to get overwhelmed, so I suggest selecting only 3 goals for each category you choose. Remember You can always add on to your list. All your goals need to be SMART!
S – Specific (or Significant).
M – Measurable (or Meaningful).
A – Attainable (or Action-Oriented).
R – Relevant (or Rewarding).
T – Time-bound (or Trackable).

3.) WRITE IT DOWN. I can’t say it enough. Get your pen and paper and get to writing. This is important because you will definitely need to go back and look at it.

4.) “If you fail to plan you plan to fail.” Develop a plan of action. A genie in a bottle isn’t going to be granting any of your wishes anytime soon, so girl you got to work. You have to know where in the world you are going. Nothing happens overnight. You want to lose 50 pounds you need a plan. Are you going to get a gym membership? Or will you have a personal trainer? How many times will you workout each week? Are you cutting out sweets? Having a plan allows you to not wander aimlessly.

5.) Don’t let your goals collect dust. Find time to review them periodically. I remember every year I would set goals and make a plan, but when I would review it every month it made it real again. My eyes stayed on the prize. So every too weeks or even monthly pull it out and see where you are at in your progress.

6.) Accountability. Share your goals with a person you trust. I believe this will help in those times you get distracted or discouraged. Having someone there that has your best interest at heart and desires you to succeed is vital. They will serve to both encourage and challenge you to stay the course and finish the race.

These are only a few tips on how to set and achieve your goals. Throughout the process stay positive and remember failure is only final when you allow it to be. Become committed to making you the best you. If you take these steps, you cannot help but succeed. No matter what your dream is, you can achieve it.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Loves!

First post of 2016 and I am beyond excited to see another day. The greatest gift we get everyday is the opportunity to open our eyes, take a deep breath, and start our day all over again. No we have 365 days to write our own story and I hope you take advantage of it. Forget about the hurts and pains of 2015 and look forward to the glorious 2016 that God has given you and make it the best yet. Let go of the bad habits of 2015 and pick up new and better habits this new year.

I’m excited to share this new year with all you beautiful people who take the time to read and comment and show support to my little blog. I’m excited about what 2016 has in store for this little blog and to grow and learn with all of you.

Now, as many of my closest friends know, I am a Serial-Thrifter. This is one habit that is definitely going with me into 2016.  My obsession started when I began to fall in love with vintage clothing. I don’t know about you, but i’ve realized that they don’t make clothes as sturdy as they used to. Nowadays, the material is just cheap…you wash them once and they shrink, change colors or tear apart. But when I would visit my favorite thrift stores and find something, it would last longer. I literally drive around on weekends looking for more vintage and thrift stores. Any time I go out of town, I start googling local vintage shoppes immediately.

One of my favorite vintage places to shop is called Rag-O-Rama in Atlanta, GA. If you’re in the area, go and check it out and let me know what you think. If you’re in Montgomery, AL there is also a great place that sells vintage clothing called Relly Rue Creative Studio; they always have great things there.

My outfit today is a nod to my obsession to all things vintage. I found this dress at Rag-O-Rama in Atlanta, GA and paired it with a great pair of ankle strap Guess heels. I kept it really simple and let the dress speak for itself!

So, what are some of your favorite thrift and vintage stores? Comment below and let us know what city you live in and the vintage stores you like so that we can visit them.

Psss…Make 2016 SPECTACULAR! Be Bolder, Be Happier and Never Give Up! I Love You.

Blah Blah Blah

People will always have something to say!

Whether you asked for their opinions or not, someone will have something to say to you about something. LOL! In this age of Facebook, tweets, cell phones, iPads and all the other ways we communicate with each other, someone will say something that is uncalled for and unwelcome. I have learned to simply tune out those opinions and “advice” that aren’t really helpful. I have learned to laugh at the people that say something mean or rude and make it sound like advice. You know the ones that say things like, “you know sweetheart, you just aren’t built for that” or “girl you’ll never get that job…maybe you should apply for something easier” or “Honey if I were you I would quit” or “just leave him, he’ll never change.” The list goes on and on. I find it funny that the ones who give up on their dreams are the first to give the same advice that helped them fail. If they can’t pull you down, then they try to talk you down. They intimidate and put fear in your heart so you won’t reach for greater.

TUNE THEM OUT! Every time negativity comes your way, let it come in one ear and go out the other. Learn to know the difference between constructive criticism and negativity. One builds you up and the other brings you down.

Choose to hear “blah, blah, blah” when someone is in your ear trying to give you false advice or speak death over your dreams and aspirations. You’ll be happier if you do this, trust me. You don’t know how many times i’ve given up because I followed the wrong leader or listened to the wrong voice.

—————————————————-

Gianni Bini is one of my favorite go-to labels when it comes to clothes. Dillard’s sells a lot of this designers items and I never fail to find something that is trendy, inexpensive and absolutely fabulous.

I found this great faux leather jacket with the matching skirt by Binni about two months ago. As soon as I saw the pair, I knew it was going home with me…LOL. I paired it with this killer sleeveless graphic shirt by Soprano and my favorite pair of JLO boots courtesy of Khols.

Hope you like this look. Let me know what you think and how you like to wear your faux leather. Also, give us advice on how you drown out negativity and negative comments. Being on social media and starting this blog, I get a lot of negative comments, especially on Instagram, so I had to learn to get tougher skin and not pay attention to any of it.

Pass…Kylie Jenner had a similar (more expensive) look on the other day by Cushnie Et Ochs with these bomb pair of Brian Atwood thigh high boots:

Comment below and let me know what you think of this look, how you would have worn it differently and you thoughts on negative people and negative comments. I seriously love all of you and impact and positivity you bring to me with your love and comments for this blog.

Fly Day!

IT’S MY BIRTHDAY LOVES!

Okay, so when I turned 23yrs old, I had just gotten back from San Diego, Cali and I cried my little eyes out because I was a college dropout, I was unmarried, I had no kids and I thought I was soooo old. Boy, if I had known better, I would have danced all night and celebrated like it was my 21st birthday. I was so young! Now I’ve arrived to my 30th birthday and God not only brought me my soulmate, but I’m working on my Masters Degree. I’ve realized that life is about enjoying yourself and learning to find inner joy, no matter where you find yourself. We spend so much of our lives waiting and striving for our better tomorrow, we forget to enjoy the beauty in today.

So i decided to compile a list of 10 essential things i’ve learned in my 30 years:

  1. It Gets Better. Remember the man or girl you thought you couldn’t live without, remember that job you got fired from, remember that friend that stabbed you in the back? Well, let me tell you, time heals all wounds and it gets better. Someone better will come along to make you forget that heartache, you will get a better job with more money and God will bring you better friends. Trust me, don’t stress over the people that willingly leave your life or the things God removes. Some things/people that leave were never meant to be permanent anyway.
  2. Mom is All-Knowing and All-Wise. As a teenager, I didn’t get along with my mom at all. But when I moved out, got my own place, started paying bills and had real responsiblities, I realized I really did need her help and advice. She really does have the answers to all life questions. Cherish her. Thank you Kemi Searcy for all that you’ve done and given me.
  3. Family is Life. Enjoy the time you have with them now, because it goes by fast and they aren’t here forever. Keep in mind that friends you choose, family is just family…so love them through the good, bad and ugly.
  4. Pick Up and Go. Life is so very short, don’t spend it working, sleeping, eating and getting ready for death (i’m serious). Save money, pick up and see the world; you won’t regret it.
  5. A Penny A Day. Save money! OMG, if I could go back and tell my 19yr-old self anything, it would be to save, save, save and to leave that guy alone…lol. Don’t try and keep up with anybody that’s maxing out cards to “ball out.” Let the Kardashian’s ball out and you save your hard earned money for the future, for your kids and for retirement.
  6. Let It Go. Don’t ever hold on to toxic people, toxic things and toxic situations. Let go of anything in your life that does not benefit you. If it’s not helping you achieve your goals, then it’s probably not meant for you…let it go.
  7. Plan! Wow, this is probably the thing I’ve realized lately is very important. We have to live intentionally. We have to plan for the future we want, the kids we want, the degrees we want, the happiness we want. Life doesn’t happen accidentally, trust me, it’s all about planning and walking out that plan.
  8. Love Yourself. There is no other you. You may not have the body, height, weight, etc. that you want, but that’s okay. It’s also okay to work on the things that you know need improvement. If you decide you want to lose weight, go ahead and do it; if you decide that you want to wear makeup, go ahead and do it; if you decide you want to better your self through education, definitely do it. Anything that you want to do to enhance your beauty or brain, do it–but remember that it’s just an enhancement. Every improvement we make on ourselves is just icing on the cake. Remember, you are already beautiful.
  9. Serve Others. I remember one of the best things I started doing was volunteering at Faith Rescue Mission here in my hometown. I would go three times a week to serve food in their soup kitchen. Everybody in there showed me such love that I couldn’t help but love them back. The first day I went there I cried as I served the food, and I made up in my mind to always remain humble, grateful and to always give back to those less fortunate than myself. Find someway you can serve someone else and see how much fuller your life will be.
  10. Last but definitely not least…LOVE GOD! Without Him, none of these lessons would be worth anything. I love because He first loved me. So take time out to cultivate and form a relationship with him. Find a local church and spend time getting to know the One who loves you enough to die for you.

So, in a nutshell, that’s what i’ve learned in 30 years of being on this earth. Every lesson in life can be summed up in these 10 things and I am ever grateful for the life God has given me.

I am determined to make this 30th year my best year ever. I may no longer be in my 20’s but I’m grateful to still be alive, thriving and happy. Plus, I have so much more vision and drive now than when I was in my 20’s. What dreams and desires do you want to accomplish before your next birthday? Let me know.

Thank you all for the support and love for me and for this blog. I love every single one of you.

Thankful

Happy Thanksgiving All,

I am going to keep this blogpost short, but I wanted to give you a BTS view of how my family celebrates Thanksgiving. Being from Africa, I never knew or celebrated Thanksgiving until I came to America. I fell in love with this awesome tradition. How wonderful is it that we get a whole day dedicated to giving thanks for all the things that we have. This is a tradition that we should try to keep all year around. I am forever grateful for all that God has given me. The opportunity to come to America, my family, my husband, my church and the future I have yet to see or achieve.

I pray that this thanksgiving was a good for you as well. Even if you didn’t celebrate it with your natural family or with all the food and friends that you wanted, you are still blessed because you are alive right now! I thank God for every single one of you that read this blog and encourage me with all the kind words and love…I pray that this holiday season is peaceful and blessed.

Because I’m Happy

What does it mean to be truly happy? I remember when I was a kid, I used to be so moody, angry and pessimistic about everything. I never quite fit in any circle. I was from Africa, I was short, I had an accent, I was a nerd…and the list goes on and on. So, needless to say, I was never happy with myself or the world. Then as I got older, I began to become more comfortable with myself and to truly love myself.

I had to come to terms with the fact that no one can make me happy like I can make me happy. I know you’ve probably heard this before, but it is so true. I realized that if there was an area in my life I was unhappy with, I had to take an active role in fixing it…I had to find my own inner happiness. Yes, I was short. Yes, I had an accent. Yes, I was a book-nerd, but that’s what make me who I am. I was not meant to be like everybody else–and I should not want to be like everybody else.

Learning to be internally happy with yourself is the best gift you can give to yourself this holiday season. You may not have the man you want, the money you want, the body you want or the fame you want, but at least you are alive, you are capable and you have a future. So, when you’re feeling unhappy with yourself, or jealous of someone else’s happiness, remember all that you have, be thankful for it, and watch your attitude and feelings begin to change.

Above all, remember that no one can audition to be you, that role is already filled…so break a leg!
