Embracing Jealousy

“I hate you, I hate you, I don’t know you and I hate you!”

Today, I’m going to tell you a story about how embracing jealousy changed my life! LOL…Don’t close the page, give me a chance to explain this to you. I don’t know how many of you ever watched “The Chappelle Show” back in early 2000’s. I was obsessed with it, even though it was a bit grown-up for me at that time. The Chappelle show was truth wrapped in a comedic shell and this formula made it very successful.

embracing jealousy: how to make it work for your goodMy favorite episode was the Player Hater’s Ball. I literally died laughing at that episode but in the middle of all that laughter, I learned a lot about embracing jealousy and turning it into motivation and NOT anger. The episode was all about a group of men that were so filled with hate they got awards for hating on someone’s success, looks and personality. I find in today’s society, people think that being a hater and being jealous and petty is very chic and cool. FYI it’s not! Jealousy can be a bad thing but when you embrace it you can actually turn it into motivation.

So, no this post is not 101 ways to be a better hater…sorry!

Webster defines jealousy as a feeling of resentment because of someone else’s success, advantages, or because of a personal rivalry. LISTEN LINDA, WE ALL GET JEALOUS! Anyone that says they’ve never been jealous of someone else is lying. It’s okay to feel jealousy, it’s what you decide to do with it that makes the difference.

Here are 5 ways I learned to embrace jealousy and make it work for my good.

  1. Compliment Your Rival: When it’s 10PM and you’re scrolling on social media and you see your friend is engaged, having a baby or got a promotion, don’t scroll by and roll your eyes, compliment them. Even if you don’t feel it, do it. Blessings come when we learn to rejoice with other people!
  2. Smell Yourself: My mum used to say if you travel and everywhere you go stinks, check your self because it might be you smelling. When jealousy creeps up, it’s because in some way or another we feel inadequate. We may be having a low self-esteem day and going online can sometimes make things worse. When insecurity creeps in, ask yourself “why do I feel this way and what can I do to build myself back up” Listen, when your self-esteem is low, log offline and get with a group of people that can uplift, pray and compliment you.
  3. Let it Push You: There is nothing like jealousy to motivate you to do better. I remember seeing my friend that had a baby a month after me, and she was back in a size 6. I was sooooo mad at her and at myself and at my body but instead of taking it out on her and letting jealousy eat me up, I decided to embrace jealousy and let it push me to exercise. Embracing jealousy can turn “hateration” into greatness.
  4. Talk It Out: Sometimes you just gotta talk it out with a friend. When you’re feeling inadequate and jealous of just about everyone and everything they have and you don’t have, get advice from your pastor, get prayer from a friend or grab a glass of wine and chat it out with girlfriends. Nothing soothes like being able to work things out with people you trust
  5. Love is Greater: Love conquers all things. So, if hate is creeping up on you, say no and choose love. Dr. Seidman wrote a great article on jealousy in a relationship setting entitled, ‘What’s really behind Jealousy and what to do about it” and if you and your spouse are dealing with this issue, read the article HERE

embracing jealousy: how to make it work for you

Remember, embracing jealousy is not always a bad thing when you learn to make it work for your good. Next time the green-eyed monster creeps up on you, remember these 5 steps and allow love to win.

“Every day is a celebration when you have the right bag”

Today on the blog, I am showing you how to style a floor-length wrap dress with a plunging neckline and a colorful-textured bag. I received this bag to style for a local business owner and entrepreneur and I fell in love with it as soon as I received it. The bag is PHENOMENAL! it’s heavy, well-made and a topic starter. It definitely makes a statement no matter how and where you wear it.

Let’s begin with this beautiful plunging neckline dress. It’s a Gianni Bini wrap dress that is a little too long for me but the color was too rich to pass up. I began by layering the dress with a gold, jewel-encrusted undershirt and finished it some sky-high, ankle-strap heels. I don’t know about you, but I’m not really a plunging-neckline type of girl so I always layer to hide my décolletage. One tip when layering an outfit is put a shirt underneath that has a pattern or is jewel-encrusted or has texture to it. It just adds a little something extra to the look. For my petite girls, a sky-high heel and a long dress with a slit is your best friend; it helps elongate your frame. Another tip: if your dress has a split, find a pair of sexy heels and let them legs show!

how to style a plunging neckline and colorful bag

I love how there are little accents of gold from my bag to my shoe to my undershirt.

Now, Let’s talk about how to style this colorful bag. I recently did a post on Adachicdesigns and you can read all about it HERE! This bag is one of my favorite bags i’ve styled so far because it makes a statement all by itself. I love this colorful piece because I don’t have to do much to make it stand out. Last tip, when styling a colorful bag, try and keep everything else simple, unless of course you love styling different prints and textures. You can pair this bag with a little black dress or to be more edgy, pair it with a patterned dress. Check out the site www.adachicdesigns.com to purchase your own special bag.

Fringetober

Is it me or did this year go by like cash in your wallet?

It’s a new month and we have a little over two months before 2018. Ya’ll, I feel like I was just dancing in the new year and now it’s almost over and I actually haven’t even finished all my “New Years Goals” list. Jesus help me. Oh, well…I still have this month and November and December to get things done. But, let’s move on to this October-worthy dress.

This post is all about one of my favorite fall trends…FRINGE. I love this trend because it is just so fun. I’m all about a dress that moves and gives dimension from every angle. You can’t help but have all eyes on you when you walk into a room dripping with fringe-goodness. When I shot this look in Birmingham, I had so many men and women stop me to ask me where I got the dress from. Well, you guys have the inside scoop. This dress is just $54.99 (yells into pillow).

This dress is so amazing and the sheen and shimmer is perfect for a night out on the town or a special event. I added a t-strap Gianni Bini heels and a simple gold clutch. I let the dress pave the way and kept everything else simple. FYI, this dress also comes as a jumpsuit too (it’s already in my Amazon cart).

So, who else is fearless enough to give this fun dress a try?! Let me know if you order it and tag House of Odara when you wear it. Find on Instagram: Oluwafunmifly and go like my Facebook page: House of Odara.

Form-Fitting…No Problem

“I like my clothes like I like my money, stretchable”

Let’s jump right into one of my favorite topics…Lycra. Okay, today i’m talking about what to look for when you buy form-fitting jeans and dresses and how to wear it without looking round or lumpy. As a new mummy, wearing stretch denim or dresses scared me because of my weight gain and the shape of my new body. Big dresses and sweats were my BFF’s until I realized I could still be a hot mama I just needed to pick the right items, pair it well and accentuate the good.

You don’t have to be afraid of stretch material because it’s a actually a girls best friend. When buying a pair of jeans, a 3-4% stretch is what you need. The lycra will help shape your legs and stomach and give you a great shape. Stretch is your BFF whether you are curvy, petite, tall or in-between.

When designers Daniel and Derek of SplashedbyDKG sent me a dress to blog for them, I almost screamed when I saw that it was a dark blue stretchy material. I thought how am I going to wear this without making my body look round? Well, duh, when in doubt, BELT IT.

The beautiful thing about belts is that they help cinch in that waist and give the illusion of an hourglass figure. You want to wear the belt at the smallest part of your waistline and let the magic happen. After I put the dress on and let go of my phobia, I realized it shaped to me so well and the slinky material was flattering as well as super comfortable. The thing I was so afraid of ended being my favorite asset. I found a pair of sexy Forever21 heels, a tulle sock and my fur jacket to add a little bit more drama to this look and voila, magic!. The dress will be sold at the Magic City Market today from 12-4 at the Goldstein and Cohen Building at 406 19th St Ensley, Birmingham, AL 35218. I hope to see you guys there.

Velvet Studded T-Strap Heels

So, don’t be afraid of form-fitting clothes. Learn to pair them with something that accentuates the good, like a great belt or a crop jacket, blazer or cape. My friend Aliscia, who is a bit curvier paired her with a trench and gold belt. She made the look her own and killed it as well. This is the same dress, two different body shapes, two different styles but both are amazing.

Let me know if I’ll be seeing you at 12PM at the Magic City Market and come find me if you come. Let me know if you plan on recreating this beautiful look and again, don’t be afraid of the stretch, it can be your best friend if done the right way. Boo, is that you?!

“A good man/woman is hard to find but time wasters are a dime a dozen”

Okay, So it’s October and officially Cuffing Season (LOL!). This post is all about how to find the RIGHT ONE to cuff. Marriage is one of the biggest decisions we will ever make in our life. So, don’t take it lightly and don’t waste time on time-wasters, marriage-phobes and the one-hit wonders (once they Hit-it, they are gone). I have compiled stories from couples that have been married for over 10 years to one’s who just got married last year. Lots of good wisdom in one post.

My husband met me at church while I was busy working, enjoying life and worried-less about what guy was looking at me. He said the first thing he noticed about me, besides my legs, was my tenacity. He said I looked like I had everything together (FYI I WAS A MESS). I had just broken off a relationship, I was hurting, lost and felt so rejected…but I didn’t look like it. The moment I knew he was the one was when I saw the way he treated his mom and sisters. I’m a family oriented person and I knew he was too and we connected in that aspect as well as our faith, work-ethic and goals. So that is my story, here are some others:

This is Brian and Brittany Ramsey of Birmingham, AL. They have been married for one year and met while out on the town. Brittany said she knew Brian was “The One” because:

A. He made it known he was SERIOUS about me and about the relationship.

B. He took the lead to introduce me to everyone in his family, his friends and into his world.

C. Brian said he knew Brittany was the one because she carried herself like a QUEEN!

Their advice is not to sell yourself short trying to be everything to someone who isn’t trying to be everything to you. Make sure you know from the beginning whether the person is as serious as you are so you don’t waste your time You don’t have to wait 10yrs to figure out that the girl or guy is not serious (honey, you’ll know right away).

This is Sederick and Sametta Fluker of Montgomery, AL. They met while in college at Alabama State University and have been married for 19 “wonderful” year as of TODAY! They have two children, both work and they still make time to enjoy each other and their marriage. Here is their advice for spotting “the one”:

A. She knew he was marriage material because he had a good work ethic and she knew he would be a great provider

B. He also kept his promises even when they were just dating (aaaahhh so important)

Their advice is to understand each other’s values and worth and get to know each other from the inside out instead of outside in. This means, get to know their internal beauty and then factor in their external beauty. Remember, looks can be deceiving because an apple may look good from the outside but be rotten once you bite into it.

This is Christopher and Maraya Searcy from Montgomery, AL and Oklahoma City. They met at an internship in Kansas city and have been married for 4 months. They are loving married life and here are their words of wisdom:

A. She knew Chris was marrying material because of his capacity to love and serve without expecting anything in return.

B. He was also serious about his walk with Christ and his faith

C. He knew she was it for him because of her love for those around her and her faith

Their advice would be to not only make sure that your potential spouse has all the good qualities you are looking for, but also make sure you have those qualities as well. Make sure you are wife/husband material.

This is Antonio and Tamera Felder of Prattville, AL. They are both in the military and met while in college. They have been married for almost five years and love that they are each other’s best friends. Here is their advice on finding your mate:

A. She said she knew Antonio was the one because he drove 14 hours just to meet her parents and sit down with her dad face-to-face to express how much he liked her and his intentions for them.

B. He said he knew he could marry Tamera because she was loving, caring, possessed great character and had a great booty and a beautiful face (ayyyee).

Their advice would be to put God first in your marriage if you want success. Even in the dating process, put God first and He will lead you to the right one. Plus, never rush into anything. Take your time to get to know the person and trust God’s timing. Remember, no one wants a half-baked cake so let God finish working on him/her before you marry them.

Lastly, I asked my cousin (she’s single) some of the things she looks for when she’s dating someone so she doesn’t waste her time.

Ashlen is mother to Kaylen Loban, law student and the paralegal at a law firm in Montgomery, AL. She is also CEO of HeyGirlHey a weekly email with uplifting, funny and insightful messages. Here is her advice to the single man/woman seeking love:

A. Don’t overlook early red flags…they aren’t there just for decoration. If it’s a red flag now, it’ll be a full blow fire two years down the line.

B. Have a conversation about the trajectory of the relationship. Are y’all on the same page as to where this is leading?

C. Don’t get caught up in the hype of dating and being on the market, spend that time to work on you, better yourself, travel, enjoy life and BOSS UP!

I hope this post helped you in some way or the other. Comment below and let me know which advice helped you and how you plan on dating with purpose in the future. If you’re already married, comment and let us know how you knew your spouse was “the one” for you.

Here is a great book for those who are single and those who are married to help you understand the opposite sex better and IT’S ON SALE NOW: CLICK PICTURE TO PURCHASE

Is That Gucci?!

“It’s not real, I just make it look good”

This blog is about how I found my Gucci-inspired bag for thousands less….get ready, get ready, get ready!

My look today is all about real vs. fake. I’ve always been one of those people who hated anything fake…especially fake bags. But, the way my budget is set up, I can’t afford real Gucci or real Chanel (FYI if you want to send me a real Chanel, DM me). So, when I found this great faux-Gucci bag for $41.99 I snatched it up.

This authentic Gucci Dionysus retails for $3,600 and if you have the money, by all means buy it and buy one for me. But, if you’re struggle booty like me, you love a good knock-off.

When I wore my Gucci-inspired bag for the first time, I got so many compliments on it. I thought to myself, “It may not be real, I just know how to make it look EXTRA TASTY”.

Amazon has a great Dionysus inspired bag for…WAIT FOR IT…. $21.99 (JESUS IS LORD). Now, let’s get into my look and the links to purchase these great pieces. Like I said in my last Fall-inspred post, this season is all about layering. You can turn summer pieces into fall pieces by just layering it. I paired a gingham off-shoulder ruffle sleeve blouse with a great pair of black distressed jeans and a grey crop-top shirt to make this fall look. I added my Gucci-inspired bag and black heels to complete this easy-breezy night out with the girls ensemble.

I wore a pair of heeled sandals but you can mix it up with a colorful shoe or booties. This outfit is everything and easy to recreate so, go for it.

Cool.Mum

“Mum jeans are so last season…I’m a cool mum!”

Okay, this jumpsuit is not for the faint of heart. LOL! Being a new mum is hard, beautiful, rewarding and did I mention HARD. I think the hardest part for me was getting my sexy back. Mommies, you have to remember how you snatched your hubby up…you can’t go from hottie to hot-mess (sigh). Men are visual…like very visual so you gotta maintain that flyness. You have to learn how to dress for that extra body weight and accentuate the good. I am queen of hiding the bad (FY…control top panties and a GOOD bra).

When I found this jumpsuit on Amazon and read the reviews, I knew it would be perfect for a date night with my husband. After having Sammy, I still have 15lbs to lose, so I was looking for something that was not tight on my legs or stomach, made me look taller but also had sex appeal. This jumpsuit was it. I kept the styling very simple and let the colors and stripes speak for me. FYI This jumpsuit is only $24.99 with Amazon Prime.

CLICK PICTURES FOR PRODUCT LINKS

Remember, try and dress for the body you have. If you are short, find dresses and pants that lengthen you. Horizontal stripes are slimming and elongate your frame. If you are tall and thin, you literally are my dream body. You can wear horizontal and vertical stripes. The trick is finding pants that match your height but there is nothing a little tailoring can’t help. Find a tailor that can let the seams out of the pants and sleeves to add more inches. If you are plus, don’t put on tents and large items but find clothes that accentuate your waist, bust or gorgeous legs (pick one body part to accentuate at a time). A peplum shirt is the go-to for curvier girls and a belt can fix almost anything. So, find things that compliment you and your shape and rock it with boldness!

So, what has been your biggest style challenge since having a baby or becoming pregnant? Have you found it hard to get your groove back when it comes to styling your new body? Let us know how you’ve been dealing with your body and styling issues and if you have any questions, please comment below and I will answer them.

“Dress how you want to be addressed”

So, I love a gorgeous, well-dressed woman. Yes, I am that chick that stares at other pretty girls from across the room. I’m always envying someone’s bag, dress or shoes….sigh, who else is like me? It’s not jealousy, just admiration. Well, I have a blog and now I can have those gorgeously dressed women on my blog and give them the credit they deserve while stealing all their looks as well…(bahahahaha). Today, I am profiling the ever gorgeous, long-legged, stylish Courtney Pettway. This girl can dress y’all, and for all my tall girls, this is for you. So, here she goes….

We have all heard that saying, and it’s one that I live by. I truly believe that it is possible to dress fashionably and make a statement without breaking the bank. Majority of these looks didn’t even cost me more than 50 bucks! My fashion tip: don’t always go by the ‘brand’; just because it may hold a popular brand name does not mean it’s quality and just because it’s not a popular ‘brand’ doesn’t mean that the quality is cheap! So whether you are shopping at Nordstrom, a high-end boutique, Goodwill, or other second-hand store, go for quality pieces at a reasonable price (within YOUR budget).

One of my favorite go-to pieces are blazers. Why? Because you can wear them with literally anything, anywhere, and anytime of day. I found these awesome, pink high-waisted pants BRAND NEW and tagged at $100.00… Did I pay that? Absolutely not lol. I purchased them from a local thrift store in Louisville, had them tailored (making MY total a whopping $15 ) paired them with a patterned blazer (which I caught on sale), with black heels, and a black fitted tank.

Pants: Goodwill

Blazer: Banana Republic

Tank: Ross

Heels: Just Fab

Purse: Steve Madden

Perfect for a casual date night (nothing fancy). I love off the shoulder EVERYTHING, so when I saw this shirt I immediately grabbed it. I paired this with a forest green mini skirt, camel-colored sandals , my other favorite accessory (aviators) and one of my favorite bags.

Shirt: Ross

Skirt: Target

Shoes : Jessica Simpson

Bag: Michael Kors

I received soooo many compliments on this jumper at a recent wedding. I immediately fell in love with it and could NOT wait to wear it!

Jumper: HHHGluxe

Pink crossbody: Ross

Neutral Heels: BCBG

Did I tell you that I love bold colors and patterns? Oh, and here is yet another blazer lol.

Blazer: Thrift store

Tank: Ross

Shorts: Calvin Klein (From Platos)

Strappy sandals: Just Fab

So I was told yellow is my color, and I would have to agree! This was a perfect summer look!

Shirt: Ross

Shorts: Forever21

Sandals & Fringe crossbody: Ross (Do you see a pattern? Haha. Ross is definitely one of my favorite stores).

My other favorite accessory is..hats. Whether it’s a wide brim, fedora, snapback or fitted cap, I will rock them all and pair them with just about everything.

Fedora: Amazon

Shirt: Boohoo

Skinny Jeans: Missguided

Sandals: Target

Ironically, these looks are not only inexpensive, but most of the pieces are also several years old! This just goes to show you that it is possible to buy quality pieces that are not only budget friendly, but will last throughout ever-changing fashion trends!

On Target

“Fashion is who you are wearing, Style is how you wear it”

Okay, So I follow a lot of bloggers who have a lot of money or collaborate with a lot of high-end fashion designers. Everything they wear cost more than my college tuition…I mean labels to the GAWDS. Now, I definitely cannot keep up with them when it comes to high-end items but I can make any item I buy look high-end. FYI this is what style is all about. I respect those who can make thrift store finds and bargain clothes look like a million bucks. To me, style does not equate money…it transcends money.

Today’s blog is very special because I’ve teamed up with two other bloggers to style one item from Target’s “WhoWhatWear” collection. One thing I love about Target is that they always do collaboration with great high-end designers. This one launched January 31, 2016 and is based off current fashion trends and user/blogger feedback. The pieces are all under $50.00 and y’all, they are gorgeous. I am collaborating with blogger KD Harris of “Wear to Feast” and Dani Gee of “Danigee25” for this collection. We will be doing a GIVEAWAY soon.

We each paired our favorite item from the collection with something already in our wardrobe to show you how to wear the pieces and how to style on a budget. I purchased the ruffle wrap skirt in a size 4 *coughs…too small* but it’s on sale right now for $20.00. I paired it with an Ankara top, and my all time favorite pair of heels. My bag is thrifted but I found the coveted bamboo bag on Amazon for under $25.00 (you’re welcome).

KD styled her layered ruffle mini dress with a yellow clutch and black flats. This look is just so comfortable and great for a day date. Read and shop this look HERE. Dani Gee styled her colorful ruffle top with a pair of jeans and and strapped flats. Read and shop this look HERE. You can also find these awesome bloggers on IG: Weartofeast and Danigeelk

Let me know your thoughts on the WhoWhatWear collection. Have you ever bought anything from that collection before and if so, how did you like it. FYI this top will be part of a collection me and a team are working on, so make sure you’re following me on Instagram, Facebook and subscribe to my newsletter for updates. For collaborations, please email me at houseofodarablog@gmail.com

Splashed!

Design creates culture. Culture shapes values. Values determine the future -R. Peters

I am secretly obsessed with creative minds. As a child, I would always make up stories to help me wash dishes or to help me cope with bullying or just to make the time go by. I had this imaginary life inside my mind that kept me sane. So, I grew up loving movies, story-telling, books, fashion and design. Pretty much anything aesthetically pleasing, I was drawn to immediately. How many of you are like that?

My goal, and the goal of House of Odara is to first motivate, next bring affordable fashion, also highlight fashionable people and finally spotlight designers and their visions. Today, this post is about this brand I stumbled on to called Splashed by DKGThe designers are actually my upstairs neighbors and the CEO’s of Magic City Fashion Week. Derek and Daniel design, sew and splash all their pieces themselves. I fell in love with their dream, work ethic and of course the designs themselves.

Today, I’m styling their tiered top (NOW ON SALE). This top fits just about anyone, from petite to plus size so check out their page and shop away. I paired this gorgeous top with a chocker from their collection, a red wrap skirt, tortoise shelled sunnies and strappy blue heels. I absolutely loved this shirt, it was comfortable, flattering and the color is just amazing. Let’s support local businesses that are doing.

I absolutely love the splashed design of the shirt, the off shoulder look, the light weight feel of the cotton and of course the compliments I received while wearing it. The shirt would also go well with white-washed jeans or tights. The beauty of style is that you get to make things your own. So, go shop and style it your own way.

Let me know what you think of this look and how you would have styled it differently. Check out the site Splashed by DKG  for the top and other fabulous items. Don’t forget to comment, subscribe and share this site. For collaborations with your brand, email me at Houseofodarablog@gmail.com
