Forever Grateful: Lessons I’ve Learned This Past Year

ISSABIRTHDAYCELEBRATION and all I want to do is reflect on the lessons i’ve learned this past year

Y’all, I am a whole year older, a new year wiser and a new year happier. There is only one word that comes to mind today and that word is GRATEFUL! I am grateful for my life, I am grateful for my family, I am grateful for my friends and I am grateful for all of you! All I want to do is throw a dance party and praise God for all of His many blessings, love, protection and favor. As I reflect on the lessons i’ve learned this past year I am overwhelmed by how much i’ve grown, become more focused and learned to take things in stride. In this post I want to share with you the five lessons i’ve learned this past year of my life and I hope it helps you in some way.

lessons I've learned this past year

Here are the five lessons I’ve learned this past year and I’ll use my name FUNMI as an acronym:

  1. Focus on the Good: There are so many things that point you to the bad and teaches you to focus on what’s wrong with your life, but you have to train your mind to focus on the good all the time. The bad in your life that you don’t like, fix it if it can be fixed but don’t fixate on it. Allow the good to be on the forefront of your mind. Philippians 4:8 says that “whatever things are lovely, whatever things are pure, whatever things are of good report, that’s what you meditate on.” So, remind yourself that you are an AMAZING human and worthy of love, success and happiness.
  2. Understand Yourself: No one will know you better than you know you. I took this year out to find myself, to find out what I wanted to do with my life and figure out how I was going to make it happen. It doesn’t matter what age you are, introspection can happen at any time. So, find yourself, find your dream, find your purpose and everything else will fall into place.
  3. Never Give Up: You don’t know how many times this year I wanted to give up on this whole blogging endeavor. I am two years into this experience and sometimes I get so bogged down with the lack of “progress” that I just want to quit. But, I keep telling myself that someone else’s trajectory is not my trajectory; someone’s path is not my path. I have to remember lesson number one and focus on the good and that keeps me from giving up. Whether it’s your job, your husband, your friends, your dream, DON’T GIVE UP… success is right around the corner.
  4. Make Time For Family: In this world of busyness and Boss moves, we have to remember friends and family. We have to remember the people that helped us get where we are now. This one lesson I’ve learned this past year is very important! I have a one-year-old son and I have to make a choice to focus on him. I’m also married, and in the middle of all the whirlwind of my day, I have to make time to focus on him. We can’t win in the business, education or our sphere of influence and lose our families and friends in the process. Make time for what’s truly important.
  5. Influence Others: The best lesson I’ve learned this year is to influence those around me. I am just starting out in my journey in life with my baby, my husband and my blog but there is someone that needs what I have to offer. I try and use my influence for good and be an open book and an open door. If anyone needs help, advice or prayer, I’m always there to help. Real talk, the more you pour into others, the more you get out of it…SO GIVE OF YOURSELF SELFLESSLY!

lessons I've learned this past year

It’s a new year for me and these lessons I’ve learned this past year will go into 2018 with me. I will focus on the good, ignore the bad and love the ones who love me back. I plan on spending my birthday with my husband in Las Vegas for a couple of days and then coming back and hugging my son until he gets tired of me. I am so grateful to see another year and again, I am grateful for each and everyone of you who come week after week to read, comment and love on my blog and on me. You keep me going. Thank you!

Now that I’ve given you the five lessons I’ve learned this past year, I hope you’ll be able to take them into 2018 with you as well. My look today is very elegant and the color is perfect for the holidays and for my BURFDAY! I wanted to be elegant and dramatic. The skirt is Badgley Mischka from Dillards Department Store and my blouse was especially made by my friends and visionary Derek D’eandre. My heels are from Macy’s Department store. I hope you enjoyed this post and this look. Check out my last post on my favorite faux furs for this winter season HERE.

Hope y’all have a wonderful weekend. For collaborations email me at houseofodarablog@gmail.com and find me on Instagram at Oluwafunmifly to see all the behind-the-scenes Vegas shenanigans.

Party Like A Rockstar: Inexpensive Dresses for the Holidays

“Inexpensive Dresses for the Holidays is the theme of this show…stay tuned!”

Listen Linda, I don’t know about you, but Thanksgiving was a working holiday for me. For the first time in years, I didn’t spend it with my family but I was in Atlanta working with Macy’s. It was amazing but I definitely missed all the love, food and family and hopefully next year i’ll be with them for Thanksgiving. However, I did enjoy two big plates the next day and I did get to enjoy Black Friday shopping with the masses. How was your Thanksgiving? I hope it was amazing. Now, that this holiday is over, It’s time to get ready for Christmas and all those awesome Christmas parties. This post will give you insight into some of the hottest trends of the season, and you can shop some of the best inexpensive dresses for the holidays.

One of the biggest trends of this season is crushed velvet clothing. I have seen so many celebrities wearing this trend and rocking it very well. I styled a velvet dress I got from Dillards with a pair of velvet, fuchsia, open-toe chunky heels and a velvet cropped jacket to on top of the dress. I finished off the look with a staple fuchsia Adachic Design quilted holiday clutch. This look was so easy to put together and is perfect for any holiday party that you get invited to attend.

Worthy: How Do You Measure Your Self Worth?

how do you measure your self worth

“How do you measure your self worth?”

Take a minute and answer this question to yourself. Really, stop reading and answer it. If someone put you in a room and told you to write down how you measure YOUR self-worth, what would you put down on that piece of paper? Is it based off your looks, your intellect, your accomplishments, the opinions of others, the amount of twitter and Facebook followers you have? How do you measure your self worth? The minute you find out the answer, hold on to it and it’s discuss it.

There is the parable about a old man who gave his son a precious ring. He told his son to take it to the market and take no less than one gold coin for the ring. The young man went to every market and every vendor and they all laughed him away and told him he was crazy and that the ring was only worth 5 silver coins. He went home disappointed and told his father he had failed. His father then told him to go to a an expert jeweler and find out the value of the ring but NOT to sell it for any reason.

How do you measure your self worth?

The young man went to the jeweler and gave him the ring. The jeweler looked it over and offered the young man 50 gold coins. The young man was so surprised he could only stare at the jeweler. The jeweler then offered 70 gold coins and promised even more if the young man would agree and sell it right away. The son picked up his ring and went home to the father surprised and confused by jeweler’s offers. He told his father the news and his father laughed and said, “Son you can’t expect the fools at the markets and in the streets to ever know the worth of something as priceless as this jewel. Only an expert will ever know it’s true value.” Now, How do you measure your self worth? Is it the street value or the value of an expert evaluator?

This story is exactly what is happening in the world we live in. We look everywhere else for self-worth except at the two experts: God who created you, and yourself. We look at “role models” like Kim Kardashian or Nikki Minaj and when our body, face, hair or life doesn’t line up, we lose a little bit of self-esteem. When we see others doing better than us in life, on their jobs, in their families, we lose a little bit of self-esteem. Without even knowing, we are unconsciously measuring ourselves against a standard that was never meant for us. So, Let me ask again, how do you measure your self worth?

How do you measure your self worth?

If the measuring rod for YOUR self worth isn’t God and yourself, then throw the whole ruler away. Start all over. You will never measure up to the standards of any one else point-blank-period. You were made uniquely, differently and beautifully. Individual from your eyes all the way to your fingertips; there is no one else like you! Keep that in mind every time comparison tries to creep in. Pick up your Bible and read how you were wonderfully and beautifully made (Ps. 139) and how God knew you and had a plan for you before you were even born (Jeremiah 1:5). Put these scriptures and self-affirming words all over your mirror, house and doors and feed your spirit with them every day. Self worth is an inside job. It begins by building ourself up from the inside out. The minute you realize your self worth and value, you refuse to give others discounts and to discount yourself from all that is good in this world.

You won’t be perfect if you’re skinnier, smarter, prettier, taller, etc. because you are ALREADY perfect! So, how do you measure your self worth? The way to measure your self-worth is by the Word of God and You. You must change how you see yourself, how you love yourself and how you treat yourself. Be your own best friend, be your own cheerleader and lift yourself up. In life, there are so many people and things that pull us down, don’t be one of those people and things…LOVE YOU AND OTHERS WILL LOVE YOU!

how do you measure your self worth?

I hope this helped someone out there. I write this because during the holidays, suicide and depression rates are at their highest. We have to learn to love ourselves, to lift ourselves up and remind ourselves of the intrinsic value that we have as human beings. We have to allow God to do the rest. When we are hopeless and feel worthless, ask God to reveal your value to you and He will. Share this post with someone who needs it and remember, I love you and hope and pray the best for you.

Thrifting 101: How I Styled My Thrifted Sweater

thrifting 101: how i styled my sweater two ways

“Thrifting 101 should be a pre-requisite for any fashion lover, stylist and shopaholic”

I’ve actually posted about how to be a thrifting queen before but the post was so popular I wanted to do it again. This post is called Thrifting 101 because I want to show you that thrifting is not gross or scary. When I first started thrifting, I hated the smell and the disorder, but now, I thrive in it because I know in the middle of that old-lady-smell and the clutter, treasures are awaiting me. So, let me tell you my 5 thrifting secrets that have worked for me these past two years.

The first rule of Thrifting 101 is to GO WITH AN OPEN MIND! This is NOT Saks Fifth or even Ross Dress for Less, so don’t expect neat, orderly and even clean (LOL)! Be ready to push clothes and people out of the way as you dig for the good stuff. The second rule of Thrifting 101 is to CARVE OUT TIME TO LOOK. You have to give yourself enough time to go down each aisle and look like someone told you there was a YSL sweater in the pile. Also, look at the schedule because most thrift stores have half-off days and percentages off different color tags. You cannot be in a rush to get in and get out…take the kids to your mum, free those hands, carry a small bag and get to WERK boo. This sweater I’m blogging was found at the Salvation Army in Hoover Alabama and after looking for 15 minutes I found it and did a little dance because it was worth the time.

Thrifting 101: How I styled my sweater two-ways

thrifting 101: how i styled my sweater two waysthrifting 101: how i styled my sweater two waysthrifting 101: how I styled my sweater two ways

The third rule of Thrifting 101 is to TRY EVERYTHING ON! So, I have yet to find a thrift store that allows you to return something because it doesn’t fit, so take the time and try it on. You can put it on over your clothes if you are worried about trying it on before you wash it, but make sure you know it fits BEFORE you take it home. This takes me to my fourth rule of thrifting, WASH/DRY CLEAN EVERYTHING AFTER YOU GET HOME. Side note: read the instructions on washing directions before you clean. My cousin bought a 100% silk shirt but didn’t realize the gold she had found so she washed and ruined it. So, make sure to read and find out what material your treasure is made of before you proceed.

Last rule for Thrifting 101 is TAKE A FRIEND! Two eyes are always better than one, so grab a girlfriend and put her to work. FYI also take hand sanitizer…i’m a mini germ freak so I always keep some in my purse. Now, i’ve styled my beautiful multi-colored knit sweater two ways. The first way is as a dress with a thick belt and thigh-high boots and the second way is as my color pop over a monochromatic look. I absolutely love this knit and it’s versatility and because I found it for less less than a Chick-fil-a sandwich. I hope these five rules help you in some way. Google thrift stores near you and take a field trip to one or two, you won’t be disappointed.

Trenched: My Three Favorite Trench Coats this Fall

“My three favorite trench coats this fall should be on your holiday wish list to Santa”

I’ve celebrated a three year wedding anniversary and the first birthday of my son…so November has been very BUSY so far. Forgive me for not blogging as much as usual. Thank you again to everyone that takes the time to read, comment and show me love weekly, I appreciate you (virtual hugs all around). I am absolutely loving this fall weather and fashion and this post is all about my three favorite trench coats this Fall. Let’s get into it and hopefully you see something you have to have.

When buying a trench coat, the first thing I look for is color. I worry about how it fits AFTER I find the color i’m looking for. The first of my three favorite trench coats this fall is a pure white or  cream long trench. I usually try and look for a cream wool coat because it fits so well with so many outfits. The one i’m wearing in this blog is a cream wool coat I fought for at a thrift store. The second thing I look for is fit. Is the trench long enough? Does it look too baggy or does it fit me comfortably? Can I move my arms during worship or is it too tight? When I answer all this, I move on to the next hurdle…PRICE.

When it comes to price, be ready to spend a little more. I usually go for a wool-blend trench coat because they tend to be less expensive but still beautiful and functional. You want this coat to last a long time so go for quality (be ready to spend money). These are my three favorite trench coats this fall and they are each worth the price tag.

Form-Fitting…No Problem

“I like my clothes like I like my money, stretchable”

Let’s jump right into one of my favorite topics…Lycra. Okay, today i’m talking about what to look for when you buy form-fitting jeans and dresses and how to wear it without looking round or lumpy. As a new mummy, wearing stretch denim or dresses scared me because of my weight gain and the shape of my new body. Big dresses and sweats were my BFF’s until I realized I could still be a hot mama I just needed to pick the right items, pair it well and accentuate the good.

You don’t have to be afraid of stretch material because it’s a actually a girls best friend. When buying a pair of jeans, a 3-4% stretch is what you need. The lycra will help shape your legs and stomach and give you a great shape. Stretch is your BFF whether you are curvy, petite, tall or in-between.

When designers Daniel and Derek of SplashedbyDKG sent me a dress to blog for them, I almost screamed when I saw that it was a dark blue stretchy material. I thought how am I going to wear this without making my body look round? Well, duh, when in doubt, BELT IT.

The beautiful thing about belts is that they help cinch in that waist and give the illusion of an hourglass figure. You want to wear the belt at the smallest part of your waistline and let the magic happen. After I put the dress on and let go of my phobia, I realized it shaped to me so well and the slinky material was flattering as well as super comfortable. The thing I was so afraid of ended being my favorite asset. I found a pair of sexy Forever21 heels, a tulle sock and my fur jacket to add a little bit more drama to this look and voila, magic!. The dress will be sold at the Magic City Market today from 12-4 at the Goldstein and Cohen Building at 406 19th St Ensley, Birmingham, AL 35218. I hope to see you guys there.

Velvet Studded T-Strap Heels

So, don’t be afraid of form-fitting clothes. Learn to pair them with something that accentuates the good, like a great belt or a crop jacket, blazer or cape. My friend Aliscia, who is a bit curvier paired her with a trench and gold belt. She made the look her own and killed it as well. This is the same dress, two different body shapes, two different styles but both are amazing.

Let me know if I’ll be seeing you at 12PM at the Magic City Market and come find me if you come. Let me know if you plan on recreating this beautiful look and again, don’t be afraid of the stretch, it can be your best friend if done the right way. Shakara.FAB

“Entrepreneur: someone who jumps off a cliff and builds a plane on their way down”

I once heard someone say if you don’t see a door, then build one and walk though it. As humans, we like to sit there and wait and wait and wait for a door to arrive. FYI, It’s never coming. Get up and make room for yourself.

I saw a movie called “Joy” yesterday and it motivated me to go for greatness. It was about the life of Joy Mangano, a business woman, author, entrepreneur, and inventor. She began as a broke, mother of two, divorcee with a crazy family that never supported her dreams. She took all the lemons life gave her and made a million dollar jar of lemonade. This movie motivated me like never before. What I got from it is that if you want something, you have to get up and GRAB IT FOR YOURSELF!

Now, Welcome the new Endeavor that I am going to make a multimillion dollar industry: Shakara FAB. My sister and I were born in Lagos, Nigeria and have always had a passion for fashion, entrepreneurship and bringing our culture to those around us. We have lived in the US for 20 plus years and now after much work, prayer and determination, we are going to make this vision a reality.

We have teamed up with our cousin Ashlen of HeyGirlHey and our close family friend Claudia Olojo of King_Queen_Melenin. Our mission is to bring authentic, African-made clothing to our friends, family and people in our sphere of influence. Shakira FAB will be a success because we will make it so by the grace of God.

This look is one of the dresses that will be available from petite to plus size. I love the shape of this dress and the way it accentuates your waist and hips. It gives you an hourglass shape even if you don’t really have one (like me). Now, let’s talk, comment below what you would like to see from us and what problems you want fixed with the fashion industry and it’s representation of all sizes and shapes. We will take your comments and make sure our designs fits everyone.

So, would you wear this dress?! Why or why not, and what would you like to see from our brand Shakara FAB. Again, thank you all for all your support and help. We love your feedback and input and will use it to better us and give you what you want.

Fall.Into.Fashion

“Hoodies, Bonfires, Cuddling…Fall is here”

I stepped outside of my apartment Saturday and It was legitimately not hot…lol!. Okay, it wasn’t sweater or even jacket weather, but I felt a small coolness in the air. Here in the South, we hardly ever get a REAL Fall or a REAL Winter. In the South, Summer is King! Still, we have to get ready for some Fall fashion, and I am giving you some of the must-haves for this season. For my friends in the North, i’m sure you are already ready for the cooler weather.

Okay, the first item I stock up on in the Fall and Winter are booties. I love them in every color, style and shape. I own a lot of them but the one i’m crushing on this season is a pair of lace up, imitation Yeezy Season IV ankle boots. I found a pair at Forever21 and they were a must buy. Kim K has been wearing them all summer long. Kim if you are reading this, please send me a pair…i’ll DM you my info (send prayers up y’all). The pair from Forever21 is a LOT cheaper.

So, i’m obsessed with every pair of booties on this list. But, for those who want a little more coverage on their legs, knee and thigh-high boots are a must have. I have a pair of silver ones on the list that are a bit daring but I plan on wearing them SOON!:

Libby Peeptoe Sock Thigh High BootsVictoria Denim Peeptoe Thigh High Boots

Next, another of my Fall must-haves is a good faux-fur jacket and Trench Coat:

Alisha Shaggy Faux Fur CoatEmily Faux Fur Collar Wool Look CoatVanessa Double Breasted Belted Trench Coat

Okay, so it is definitely time for sweaters and sweater dresses. Even though I am NOT a sweater dress person, I know how easy, comfortable and warm they can be, especially with a pair of boots. Here are some affordable sweaters and sweater dresses:

Poppy Ruffle Sleeve Sweater
Black Color Block Bell Sleeve Ruffle Hem Sweater DressFold Over Bardot Sweater Dress

Another Fall must-haves are all the accessories and accouterments that come along with cooler weather. I live for a good scarf, leggings, tights, leg warmers and gloves. Also I love a super sturdy winter bag:
Graphic Print Oversized Scarf

Mia Faux Fur Cross Body Bag

Lastly, I want to give some ON TREND buys that I have found on Amazon for way less. These are trends that have debuted on the runway for Fall/Winter 2017. I’m giving you the four trends that I like so far and will be wearing. Remember, not every trend has to be followed; find what fits you and your style best. The first trend is dark, romantic florals. Next is fringe; who doesn’t love fabric that moves. Next is the cold or one shoulder look. Lastly is the Glitter-bomb trend (YAY)! Anything with glitter is my friend and I love this last dress because it’s fringe and glitter mixed together. Look at the Fall trends for 2017 and pick which ones you like and rock it with your bad self!

Remember, during the Fall and Winter, layer as much as possible. Put on an under shirt with an oversized sweater, a pair of great jeans or leggings and some booties, and you’ll be fashionable and warm all winter long. All these looks are affordable and will have you looking fabulous and stylish. So, what are you looking forward to purchasing and wearing this Fall/Winter season? Comment below and let me know.

On Target

“Fashion is who you are wearing, Style is how you wear it”

Okay, So I follow a lot of bloggers who have a lot of money or collaborate with a lot of high-end fashion designers. Everything they wear cost more than my college tuition…I mean labels to the GAWDS. Now, I definitely cannot keep up with them when it comes to high-end items but I can make any item I buy look high-end. FYI this is what style is all about. I respect those who can make thrift store finds and bargain clothes look like a million bucks. To me, style does not equate money…it transcends money.

Today’s blog is very special because I’ve teamed up with two other bloggers to style one item from Target’s “WhoWhatWear” collection. One thing I love about Target is that they always do collaboration with great high-end designers. This one launched January 31, 2016 and is based off current fashion trends and user/blogger feedback. The pieces are all under $50.00 and y’all, they are gorgeous. I am collaborating with blogger KD Harris of “Wear to Feast” and Dani Gee of “Danigee25” for this collection. We will be doing a GIVEAWAY soon.

We each paired our favorite item from the collection with something already in our wardrobe to show you how to wear the pieces and how to style on a budget. I purchased the ruffle wrap skirt in a size 4 *coughs…too small* but it’s on sale right now for $20.00. I paired it with an Ankara top, and my all time favorite pair of heels. My bag is thrifted but I found the coveted bamboo bag on Amazon for under $25.00 (you’re welcome).

KD styled her layered ruffle mini dress with a yellow clutch and black flats. This look is just so comfortable and great for a day date. Read and shop this look HERE. Dani Gee styled her colorful ruffle top with a pair of jeans and and strapped flats. Read and shop this look HERE. You can also find these awesome bloggers on IG: Weartofeast and Danigeelk

Let me know your thoughts on the WhoWhatWear collection. Have you ever bought anything from that collection before and if so, how did you like it. FYI this top will be part of a collection me and a team are working on, so make sure you’re following me on Instagram, Facebook and subscribe to my newsletter for updates. For collaborations, please email me at houseofodarablog@gmail.com

Flower.Power

“A flower does not think about competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms”

Who doesn’t love a bouquet of flowers sent to their home, job or school? *NOT ME* I’m just not a real flower person; i’ll take faux flowers any day. Those little things die so quickly and end up smelling really bad. If you want to surprise me, Chanel will do. The only flowers I want are the fake one I don’t have to water or bother with at all. That’s why I love this floral look I’m blogging today…it’s full of fake flowers. LOL! It’s a simple shift dress with cut out shoulders and a floral headband. It’s a fun look and perfect for a day out on the town or a fun brunch with your girlfriends.

Shift dresses are perfect for the summer and mine is no exception. It’s super lightweight, not clingy and easy to wear. I’ve had it belted before when I wanted to make it more of a “going out” dress, but for a day date or brunch, it’s perfect unbelted. I paired it with a pair of blue Steve Madden platform heels, my floral headband, and one of my favorite Michael Kors powder-blue quilted Sloan bag. My dress is no longer available but I found an awesome one under $20.00 on Amazon.

I love the simplicity of this look. Anything I can wear that allows me to eat and not have to suck in my stomach is my best friend. My MK bag is under $200 and a great buy; I wear it a lot and the sheen on it is gorgeous. I also love these thick STURDY heels. Overall, this look is just fun and comfortable!

Let me know what you think about this look and let’s chat about handbags. Michael Kors is in the process of buying Jimmy Choo for 1.2 Billion, what are your thoughts on that. They are two such different brands; I am looking forward to seeing how they will work together as a team.
