Forever Grateful: Lessons I’ve Learned This Past Year

ISSABIRTHDAYCELEBRATION and all I want to do is reflect on the lessons i’ve learned this past year

Y’all, I am a whole year older, a new year wiser and a new year happier. There is only one word that comes to mind today and that word is GRATEFUL! I am grateful for my life, I am grateful for my family, I am grateful for my friends and I am grateful for all of you! All I want to do is throw a dance party and praise God for all of His many blessings, love, protection and favor. As I reflect on the lessons i’ve learned this past year I am overwhelmed by how much i’ve grown, become more focused and learned to take things in stride. In this post I want to share with you the five lessons i’ve learned this past year of my life and I hope it helps you in some way.

lessons I've learned this past year

Here are the five lessons I’ve learned this past year and I’ll use my name FUNMI as an acronym:

  1. Focus on the Good: There are so many things that point you to the bad and teaches you to focus on what’s wrong with your life, but you have to train your mind to focus on the good all the time. The bad in your life that you don’t like, fix it if it can be fixed but don’t fixate on it. Allow the good to be on the forefront of your mind. Philippians 4:8 says that “whatever things are lovely, whatever things are pure, whatever things are of good report, that’s what you meditate on.” So, remind yourself that you are an AMAZING human and worthy of love, success and happiness.
  2. Understand Yourself: No one will know you better than you know you. I took this year out to find myself, to find out what I wanted to do with my life and figure out how I was going to make it happen. It doesn’t matter what age you are, introspection can happen at any time. So, find yourself, find your dream, find your purpose and everything else will fall into place.
  3. Never Give Up: You don’t know how many times this year I wanted to give up on this whole blogging endeavor. I am two years into this experience and sometimes I get so bogged down with the lack of “progress” that I just want to quit. But, I keep telling myself that someone else’s trajectory is not my trajectory; someone’s path is not my path. I have to remember lesson number one and focus on the good and that keeps me from giving up. Whether it’s your job, your husband, your friends, your dream, DON’T GIVE UP… success is right around the corner.
  4. Make Time For Family: In this world of busyness and Boss moves, we have to remember friends and family. We have to remember the people that helped us get where we are now. This one lesson I’ve learned this past year is very important! I have a one-year-old son and I have to make a choice to focus on him. I’m also married, and in the middle of all the whirlwind of my day, I have to make time to focus on him. We can’t win in the business, education or our sphere of influence and lose our families and friends in the process. Make time for what’s truly important.
  5. Influence Others: The best lesson I’ve learned this year is to influence those around me. I am just starting out in my journey in life with my baby, my husband and my blog but there is someone that needs what I have to offer. I try and use my influence for good and be an open book and an open door. If anyone needs help, advice or prayer, I’m always there to help. Real talk, the more you pour into others, the more you get out of it…SO GIVE OF YOURSELF SELFLESSLY!

lessons I've learned this past year

It’s a new year for me and these lessons I’ve learned this past year will go into 2018 with me. I will focus on the good, ignore the bad and love the ones who love me back. I plan on spending my birthday with my husband in Las Vegas for a couple of days and then coming back and hugging my son until he gets tired of me. I am so grateful to see another year and again, I am grateful for each and everyone of you who come week after week to read, comment and love on my blog and on me. You keep me going. Thank you!

Now that I’ve given you the five lessons I’ve learned this past year, I hope you’ll be able to take them into 2018 with you as well. My look today is very elegant and the color is perfect for the holidays and for my BURFDAY! I wanted to be elegant and dramatic. The skirt is Badgley Mischka from Dillards Department Store and my blouse was especially made by my friends and visionary Derek D’eandre. My heels are from Macy’s Department store. I hope you enjoyed this post and this look. Check out my last post on my favorite faux furs for this winter season HERE.

Hope y’all have a wonderful weekend. For collaborations email me at houseofodarablog@gmail.com and find me on Instagram at Oluwafunmifly to see all the behind-the-scenes Vegas shenanigans.

Shoephile: My New Favorite Shoes

my new favorite shoes

“My new favorite shoes should be in your cart and ready to go home with you!”

Let’s talk about my favorite new shoe shape called the D’orsay pump. I first fell in love with this shape when I purchased my pair of red Jessica Simpson pumps. A pump is considered D’orsay if one side or both sides is cut away to reveal the arch of the foot, and the vamp is very close to the toe box. Y’all, this shape is so gorgeous, feminine and easy to wear. I am a definite Shoephile and this blog is all about my new favorite shoes.

I bought my new favorite shoes almost two years ago and they are still as beautiful and comfortable to walk in as the day I bought them. These Jessica Simpson D’orsay heels are made of fine cow hairs in a cheetah print. I paired my new favorite shoes with a nude skirt, a faux leather jacket, and a bright orange H&M sweater. This look is effortless and perfect for a date night or a night out on the town. For colder climates, a pair of stockings would go perfectly with this look.
My new favorite shoes

With all of this nude and leopard, I wanted to break it up with a bright POP of color. My bright red H&M rib knit sweater did the trick. This sweater will be in heavy rotation all winter long. It’s not only comfortable and warm but the color is amazing and the material is breathable. One rule I like to implement when wearing this girly D’orsay shoe cut is to add a masculine touch to it. Whenever I wear this shoe cut, I try and implement some sort of leather to off set the hyper femininity of the heels. That’s just my rule but you can make up your own rule once you get your pair of my new favorite shoes.

So, what do you think about my new favorite shoes and this whole look. Are you a fan of the shoe cut or do you like a traditional pump? I hope this look inspired you to go and play in your closet and come up with something similar. You can always shop this look and tag houseofodara on FB for a repost.

Thrifting 101: How I Styled My Thrifted Sweater

thrifting 101: how i styled my sweater two ways

“Thrifting 101 should be a pre-requisite for any fashion lover, stylist and shopaholic”

I’ve actually posted about how to be a thrifting queen before but the post was so popular I wanted to do it again. This post is called Thrifting 101 because I want to show you that thrifting is not gross or scary. When I first started thrifting, I hated the smell and the disorder, but now, I thrive in it because I know in the middle of that old-lady-smell and the clutter, treasures are awaiting me. So, let me tell you my 5 thrifting secrets that have worked for me these past two years.

The first rule of Thrifting 101 is to GO WITH AN OPEN MIND! This is NOT Saks Fifth or even Ross Dress for Less, so don’t expect neat, orderly and even clean (LOL)! Be ready to push clothes and people out of the way as you dig for the good stuff. The second rule of Thrifting 101 is to CARVE OUT TIME TO LOOK. You have to give yourself enough time to go down each aisle and look like someone told you there was a YSL sweater in the pile. Also, look at the schedule because most thrift stores have half-off days and percentages off different color tags. You cannot be in a rush to get in and get out…take the kids to your mum, free those hands, carry a small bag and get to WERK boo. This sweater I’m blogging was found at the Salvation Army in Hoover Alabama and after looking for 15 minutes I found it and did a little dance because it was worth the time.

Thrifting 101: How I styled my sweater two-ways

thrifting 101: how i styled my sweater two waysthrifting 101: how i styled my sweater two waysthrifting 101: how I styled my sweater two ways

The third rule of Thrifting 101 is to TRY EVERYTHING ON! So, I have yet to find a thrift store that allows you to return something because it doesn’t fit, so take the time and try it on. You can put it on over your clothes if you are worried about trying it on before you wash it, but make sure you know it fits BEFORE you take it home. This takes me to my fourth rule of thrifting, WASH/DRY CLEAN EVERYTHING AFTER YOU GET HOME. Side note: read the instructions on washing directions before you clean. My cousin bought a 100% silk shirt but didn’t realize the gold she had found so she washed and ruined it. So, make sure to read and find out what material your treasure is made of before you proceed.

Last rule for Thrifting 101 is TAKE A FRIEND! Two eyes are always better than one, so grab a girlfriend and put her to work. FYI also take hand sanitizer…i’m a mini germ freak so I always keep some in my purse. Now, i’ve styled my beautiful multi-colored knit sweater two ways. The first way is as a dress with a thick belt and thigh-high boots and the second way is as my color pop over a monochromatic look. I absolutely love this knit and it’s versatility and because I found it for less less than a Chick-fil-a sandwich. I hope these five rules help you in some way. Google thrift stores near you and take a field trip to one or two, you won’t be disappointed.

Mix-It-Up

“I love a woman that knows how to mix prints like a BAWSE!”

Have you ever tried to mix prints, pattern and textures and just given up because it was too hard? This blog post is just for you. We will be talking about how to mix prints, and textures without looking like a clown. You may not be a fan of this trend, but it is here to stay and will definitely have you looking like a style pro…so give it a try and mix it up. Here are my 5 go-to rules on how to mix prints like a BOSS:

  1. Find prints with one or two common colors
  2. Find a pattern that super busy and one that is a little less busy
  3. Find items with a common background color: either light or dark background
  4. Pastel prints mixed together is an easy go-to look
  5. stripes and florals or stripes and stripes are always a YES

In these pictures you’ll see celebrities from Solange to Blake Lively slaying and showing us how to wear mixed prints. All of them follow these simple five rules and they come out looking like they stepped right out of the pages of Vogue magazine (fyi: some of them probably did). This trend is not hard. I want you to give it a try and see how fun playing with prints can really be.

how to mix prints like a pro

My look today is a nod to the mixed print trend. I paired a printed peplum blouse with a textured bottom and ended up with this amazing and chic look. My shirt is going to be in my collection ShakaraFAB that will be available next summer for purchase. The pants are from Dillards, the shoes Amazon, and everything else will be down at the bottom for purchase.

So, do you think you are daring enough to give this trend a try?! Now that you have the rules in hand, go into that closet and pull out some clothes and start mixing. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Tag House of Odara on Facebook and find me on Instagram at Oluwafunmifly.

Issa.Celebration

“Every day is a celebration when you have the right bag”

Today on the blog, I am showing you how to style a floor-length wrap dress with a plunging neckline and a colorful-textured bag. I received this bag to style for a local business owner and entrepreneur and I fell in love with it as soon as I received it. The bag is PHENOMENAL! it’s heavy, well-made and a topic starter. It definitely makes a statement no matter how and where you wear it.

Let’s begin with this beautiful plunging neckline dress. It’s a Gianni Bini wrap dress that is a little too long for me but the color was too rich to pass up. I began by layering the dress with a gold, jewel-encrusted undershirt and finished it some sky-high, ankle-strap heels. I don’t know about you, but I’m not really a plunging-neckline type of girl so I always layer to hide my décolletage. One tip when layering an outfit is put a shirt underneath that has a pattern or is jewel-encrusted or has texture to it. It just adds a little something extra to the look. For my petite girls, a sky-high heel and a long dress with a slit is your best friend; it helps elongate your frame. Another tip: if your dress has a split, find a pair of sexy heels and let them legs show!

how to style a plunging neckline and colorful bag

I love how there are little accents of gold from my bag to my shoe to my undershirt.

Now, Let’s talk about how to style this colorful bag. I recently did a post on Adachicdesigns and you can read all about it HERE! This bag is one of my favorite bags i’ve styled so far because it makes a statement all by itself. I love this colorful piece because I don’t have to do much to make it stand out. Last tip, when styling a colorful bag, try and keep everything else simple, unless of course you love styling different prints and textures. You can pair this bag with a little black dress or to be more edgy, pair it with a patterned dress. Check out the site www.adachicdesigns.com to purchase your own special bag.

Fringetober

Is it me or did this year go by like cash in your wallet?

It’s a new month and we have a little over two months before 2018. Ya’ll, I feel like I was just dancing in the new year and now it’s almost over and I actually haven’t even finished all my “New Years Goals” list. Jesus help me. Oh, well…I still have this month and November and December to get things done. But, let’s move on to this October-worthy dress.

This post is all about one of my favorite fall trends…FRINGE. I love this trend because it is just so fun. I’m all about a dress that moves and gives dimension from every angle. You can’t help but have all eyes on you when you walk into a room dripping with fringe-goodness. When I shot this look in Birmingham, I had so many men and women stop me to ask me where I got the dress from. Well, you guys have the inside scoop. This dress is just $54.99 (yells into pillow).

This dress is so amazing and the sheen and shimmer is perfect for a night out on the town or a special event. I added a t-strap Gianni Bini heels and a simple gold clutch. I let the dress pave the way and kept everything else simple. FYI, this dress also comes as a jumpsuit too (it’s already in my Amazon cart).

So, who else is fearless enough to give this fun dress a try?! Let me know if you order it and tag House of Odara when you wear it. Find on Instagram: Oluwafunmifly and go like my Facebook page: House of Odara.

Eclipsed!

“Honey, you are like a solar eclipse…rare, beautiful and magnificent to look at.”

How many of you guys actually got to see the solar eclipse today? I know my sister had everyone in the continental United States looking for glasses for her children. The next total eclipse won’t be until April 2024…by then i’ll be “yadayadayada” years old. LOL! I got to look at it today because some wonderful Wal-mart workers let me borrow their solar eclipse glasses. It was a sight to behold. I almost was in tears thinking about the beauty of God’s creation. I don’t know about you, but things like these make me realize how small me and my problems are and how big God is (HE IS HUGE)! So, let me know how looking at the solar eclipse made you feel and your thoughts about it.

Now on to fashion…are y’all gearing up for fall fashion yet. I’m working on some great looks of the fall, but since we live in the South, summer is still on and popping. This look is ruffled, floral, fun and full of food. All my favorite F’s. I found this gorgeous Gianni Bini dress at the “Ghetto Dillards” and I knew it would be perfect for a special occasion.

I actually wore it to the grand opening of the new Fresh Anointing building in Montgomery, AL and I received a lot of compliments on it. I love dresses that are easy to wear and this is one of them. I paired it with my off-brand Azzedine Alaia heels and one of my favorite MK bags. If you live in Montgomery, stop by the Dillard’s outlet and dig for this dress, you won’t be disappointed. My dress is no longer available, but I found this gorgeous one on Amazon UNDER 30.00 (small cheers and claps)

FYI: the wonderful food is from Vecchia Restaurant in Birmingham AL. The food is delicious; check them out when you get a chance.

FYI: thanks to all of you who take time out to your day to support House of Odara. I truly appreciate all your likes, shares, comments and love…it is deeply felt and it keeps me going. Flower.Power

“A flower does not think about competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms”

Who doesn’t love a bouquet of flowers sent to their home, job or school? *NOT ME* I’m just not a real flower person; i’ll take faux flowers any day. Those little things die so quickly and end up smelling really bad. If you want to surprise me, Chanel will do. The only flowers I want are the fake one I don’t have to water or bother with at all. That’s why I love this floral look I’m blogging today…it’s full of fake flowers. LOL! It’s a simple shift dress with cut out shoulders and a floral headband. It’s a fun look and perfect for a day out on the town or a fun brunch with your girlfriends.

Shift dresses are perfect for the summer and mine is no exception. It’s super lightweight, not clingy and easy to wear. I’ve had it belted before when I wanted to make it more of a “going out” dress, but for a day date or brunch, it’s perfect unbelted. I paired it with a pair of blue Steve Madden platform heels, my floral headband, and one of my favorite Michael Kors powder-blue quilted Sloan bag. My dress is no longer available but I found an awesome one under $20.00 on Amazon.

I love the simplicity of this look. Anything I can wear that allows me to eat and not have to suck in my stomach is my best friend. My MK bag is under $200 and a great buy; I wear it a lot and the sheen on it is gorgeous. I also love these thick STURDY heels. Overall, this look is just fun and comfortable!

Let me know what you think about this look and let’s chat about handbags. Michael Kors is in the process of buying Jimmy Choo for 1.2 Billion, what are your thoughts on that. They are two such different brands; I am looking forward to seeing how they will work together as a team. Ghagerian

Have you ever wanted to be someone else?! (*slowly raises hands*)

I think we’ve all, once and maybe even now, desired to shed our skin and be someone prettier, lighter, stronger, taller, thicker, darker, etc. I remember when my sister and I moved from Africa when I was eight years old. I just wanted to be an American. I wanted to talk normal, I didn’t want to take pounded yams and peanut stew to school. The kids used to make fun of me and my sister for our hair, our clothes and especially our “stinky” food. I remember praying and asking God to make me someone different. The beautiful thing was He did, but not in the way I wanted. I never got lighter, I never got taller and I never got the Cindy Crawford legs and shape but I got ME.

The moment I learned to be Happy with my Ghanian and African heritage, my short stubby legs and my coarse hair and dark skin, I became happier. I was made beautiful the way He wanted me to be and my imperfections just added to my charm. No matter how you see yourself, remember, You are gorgeous, you are amazing and He made you beautiful the just the way you are.

This look is based on my Ghanian/Nigerian heritage. I am Ghagerian. I shot this look in beautiful Birmingham at Steel City Pops in Homewood. If you live in Birmingham or get a chance to come up here, try them out. I always get the Avocado pop because it’s dairy free and delicious. So, I styled a jumpsuit my mother brought back for me from Ghana with a gold choker from boohoo, a pair of velvet Gianni Bini heels and a brown faux leather bag.

Let me know what you think about this Ankara look. Since this outfit is from Africa, I am going to link some of my fav ankara looks I have found online. Also, have you ever dealt with image issues and how did you overcome them? I love hearing from you guys so comment below.

As you can see, I couldn’t resist buying a pop while I was there. LOL. Click on pictures for links to purchase this look:

Look in the sky…is a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s WonderMom!

As I am typing this, my son is screaming to the top of his lungs because for some insane reason, he is obsessed with my computer keyboard and I won’t let him play with it. “Everyday I hads to fight, I love Sammy, but i’ll beat him b’fo I lets him lay a hand on my Mac” (color purple reference). LOL! But for real, I am multi-tasking like crazy these days.

Being a mom is rewarding, but as many of you know, it comes with it’s challenges, long nights, longer days and headaches. Sometimes I wish there were two of me so that I could get more done. It’s easy to feel like you’re not doing enough, but as long as your baby is happy and healthy, you are doing FANTASTIC. Say that to yourself out loud because I just did.

I AM ENOUGH! I AM A FANTASTIC MOM! I AM WONDERMOM!

Say it out loud again…that felt great right?! We always have to say the opposite of what we feel in that moment. Speak good things over yourself, and over your child and you will receive good things. *insert praying hands*

This weeks look is all about caped dresses. I had a friend ask me the other day were they still in fashion and I looked at her and said, “anything that hides my stomach will always be in fashion”. I love them because it adds a bit of drama to a boring old shift dress and it can also help “camouflage” those problems areas such as big hips, wider waist lines and that stubborn tummy.

Also, if you are pregnant and looking for the perfect shower outfit, they are perfect.

Kim K wore these a lot while she was pregnant and she always managed to look chic and comfortable. Now, I can’t afford her designers, but I will definitely list a couple of great shift dresses I have found that work great for that girl on a budget. I found my gorgeous caped Gianni Bini Dress (size 8) and I paired it with a black embroidered bag and some Betsey Johnson stilettos.

So, what are your thoughts on the whole caped look, would you ever wear this style and have you ever worn this style? Comment below and let me know and check out the links to some affordable fashions down below. FYI in the middle of the shoot, Sammy threw up all over my dress. That’s the large stain at the bottom of my gorgeous dress in the last picture. *deepsigh*
