REMIXED: How to Style Pants Two Different Ways

“I don’t wear the same thing twice but I do wear the same thing more than once.”

When I was younger, my life goal was not to ever wear the same pants, dress or shoes more than once. I just wish I could go back and slap myself and say, girl get a grip and save your money. I spent every little dime on clothes and shoes because I thought I had to have something new every single day. Well, I’m older and wiser and I’ve come to the realization I don’t have to wear an outfit twice but I can definitely wear my favorite pieces more than one time.

One piece of wisdom I give to anybody that asks for fashion advice is to buy solid every-day pieces. Purchase a great pair of pants, a little black dress (LBD), a button-down shirt and a sensible but sexy pair of heels. These solid pieces can be mixed and remixed to make a bunch of different looks. The pair of polk-dot pants I’m wearing were purchased because I knew I could wear it so many different ways.

pants

In the first look, I subtly mixed prints. I styled my polka-dot pants with a polka-dot H&M men’s button down shirt. I brought in color in my little lip clutch and a pair of bright red Jessica Simpson heels. The starry-night cap brought this whole look together. The next way I styled these solid every-day pants was with an off-shoulder red sweater. I kept the bag and heels the same but added a wide brimmed hat or a more elegant feel. Both looks are so easy to copy and even easier to wear. A great pair of pants always adds more variety and selection to your closet.

Now, which styling of these every-day pants did you like better? Which way would you see yourself wearing the polk-dot pants or would yo have worn it differently? Remember to pick solid pieces that you can interchange and mix for different and unique looks. FYI, If you have a little money after picking up that LBD, those awesome pants, that button-down and those sexy heels, pick up a nice blazer and your closet will be complete. Valentine’s Day: Date Night Ideas for the Married and Single Person

Valentine's Day

Stay Calm, Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and i’m here to help

One of my favorite Valentine’s Day was my first one with my husband. He was such a BAD gift giver. My love language is gifts so I always go ALL OUT and spoil him. I get so much pleasure out of giving. He is the opposite. His love language is providing for us, so when it comes to gift giving, he thinks a book marker is a great gift (rolls eyes). Don’t worry, I’ve trained him and he’s getting better each year. But, our first Valentine’s day was special because it was our first and he gave me my favorite thing…unadulterated time with him. Sometimes, it’s not about gifts but about quality time with the one you love.

Now, don’t get me wrong…I LOVE A GOOD GIFT and a night out, so this post is all about some fun ideas that you and your spouse or single friends can do on Valentine’s Day. FYI, if you’re single, grab your girlfriends or guy friends and plan a night out with them. Here are four great Valentine’s Day date night ideas that are sure to be a hit:

  1. Game Night: for my singe guys and girl, invite some of your friends over and get Charades or Apples Over Apples out and enjoy each other’s company. You never know if you’ll find that special someone on your Valentine’s Day Game Night.
  2. Dinner and Netflix: I absolutely hate going out and standing in line for an hour for a table at a restaurant. Last Valentine’s Day, I actually cooked dinner for my husband and we stayed home, ate, talked and watched a movie. We had such a great intimate night and we didn’t have to tip anyone. Remember to keep it light, no talk about kids or finances, just good times.
  3. Table For Two: Now, if you want to brave the long lines and busy streets on Valentine’s day, make sure you call ahead to get put on their waiting list. Otherwise, pick a time that you know is not too busy, either go really early or later on for your date.
  4. Get Active: Get out and take your spouse or friends to a bowling alley or Top Golf. Find something active to do around your city and go make some memories. FYI Groupon is the best for finding coupons for great date ideas for Valentine’s Day

Married ladies, remember even if you’re staying home, dress up and make yourself into a gift for your husband. FYI husbands, try your best to look like a snack too. If you’re single and having friend’s over or going out for Valentine’s Day, make sure you look nice, you never know who you might bump into (ayyyyyeeeee).

Valentine's Day

My outfit is Valentine’s Day is perfect because it’s comfortable, cute and not overly cheesy with a bunch of red or pink. I kept it black and white with pops of red in my knit jacket and booties.

No matter what you do, make sure you enjoy yourself on Valentine’s Day. If you’re single, don’t just sit at home and bemoan your singleness, get out and enjoy time with yourself or with friends. If you’re married, plan something adventurous for your and your husband or wife and remember, no kids or finance talk..focus on the two of you and your love. I hope this helps you in some way.

NYFW: The Super Bowl Championship for designers and creatives

“Excuse me sir, but my Super Bowl is called New York Fashion Week and it’s starts TODAY!”

For those who don’t follow fashion as closely as some others do, the biggest events in fashion happen twice a year in the “big four” fashion mecca’s, New York, London, Paris, and Milan. The concept of fashion week began in London but the tradition has been “official” since 1943 when New York held it’s first official fashion week. Each fashion week lasts an actual week and allows buyers and influencers a taste of what’s upcoming in fashion and trends for the the next season.

Tickets for major shows are expensive and front row seats are as coveted as sleep after a week of having a newborn (lol)!. I will not be going this year, but I will get to enjoy the shows via live stream and runway photos from the show. You can watch the shows along with me HERE and view the official schedule for NYFW. BUT, if I were going, this outfit would be the first look I would sashay around the streets of New York in and shut it down.

fashion week

I kept this look feminine but edgy with a cute but rich floral jacquard peplum hem dress, and my on-trend heels with socks. This look is a little nod to my style. I love hyper-feminine clothing and all things pink but I also have a wild side (grrrr). What a perfect way to start off the first day of New York Fashion Week than in this outfit that’s the embodiment of all that is me.

My dress is not for sale anymore but I did link two of my favorite girly looks that you can easily pair with a pair of socks and my platform heels and then add a great coat to finish it off. One thing I love to do with a sleeveless dress during the winter is to pair it with a blouse as an undershirt. This one was made by my Friend Derek DeAndre and you can find more of his work Here.  I am putting the schedule for Fashion Week below and don’t be afraid to check other blogs and watch the live streams to find out what will be trending soon. I can’t wait until Next season when you and I both can meet up and have drinks before our first NYFW show. Check out my last blog post on my Super Bowl style HERE.

Black Power: What I’m Wearing to the Black Panther Premiere

February 16, 2018 is a BIG day because Black Panther comes and so does my power outfit

I plan on BUSTING the cinema doors wide open next month, dressed in ALL BLACK waiving my fist in the hair and celebrating the power that is Black Panther. I am so excited about this movie for more than one reason.black panther

When I was a young kid in Africa, my favorite superhero was Captain Planet. Who remembers him and his team of planeteers? They would go around saving the planet from all and any environmental disaster….Y’all i’m singing the theme song in my head now (lol). FYI I had a huge crush on Kwame, who was from Ghana and possessed the power of earth (yea, I was that kid).

Who else is planning on seeing Black Panther with me and if so, what are you wearing?! I actually planned on wearing something very Ankara and tribal but then I realized it was also Black history night and I wanted to make sure I was regal, powerful and unforgettable in black leather…ayyyeeeee! My motto for that night is Black Panther Loves Black Leather!

black panther

I am decked out in faux leather from head to foot in this post and I love it! I wanted to add some color to the look and what is better than a power red and a caution belt to warn people that I am armed and ready to slay. But seriously, I want to see this movie not only because it gives us a black superhero, which we desperately need, but also because of the powerful black females that are a part of the cast. These women just aren’t arm candy or helpless maidens waiting to be rescued, but they are QUEENS and warriors in their own right and as women, we need to see more of this on the big screen.

Now, let’s talk about this all black ensemble. When wearing black, I like to mix different textures and prints. When wearing any monochromatic look, keep this in mind…mix textures. I have a soft sheen faux leather stretch thigh-high boots and a faux leatherette jacket with a fur collar. Everything is black and leather but the textures are different. I also added a red patent leather bag to complete this ensemble. You don’t have to copy my look exactly but I want to give you some of my favorite leather items that would definitely make a statement at the Black Panther premiere.

BOSSED UP: Pants Suits For The Everyday Woman

You know a boss lady when she struts into the room suited and booted in a well-fitted pantsuit”

Soap Box Moment: For so long, women have worked harder or as hard as men but made statistically less dollar for dollar than their counterparts. Women have been marginalized, put down, and harassed simply because of their sex. Well women, It’s time for us to put on our pantsuits and fight back against every injustice, and harassment anyone would try to throw our way. The Golden Globes last night made me so proud to be a W-O-M-A-N!

I was almost in tears when Oprah said in her speech, “So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon…” a day where our truths and our words will set us free from discrimination. Almost every woman came, dressed in all black, in solidarity against the sexual abuses that has been happening in Hollywood for centuries. I wore all black as I watched from my home in solidarity with them as well. Remember, no matter how scared you are to speak out, “your truth is the most powerful tool you will ever have” so SPEAK OUT and don’t let anyone ever shut you down as a woman…YOUR VOICE IS POWERFUL!

Now, let me get off my soap box and talk about the fashion on the red carpet and some of my favorite looks…fyi some of the women had on pantsuits.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I just loved Kyra Sedgwick’s pantsuit so much. It fit her like a glove and accentuated her tiny waist and long legs. It also cemented the fact that women are here to stay, a force to be reckoned with and not to be taken lightly. To me a well-fit pantsuit will speak volumes and louder than anything else you can say.

Au Revoir: Setting Goals In 2018

Today I plan on drinking coffee, sitting still and setting my goals for 2018…what about you?!”

Hello New Years Eve…the night where everyone either sits and sets their goals for 2018 or turns up and prays that their 2018 will treat them right. Do you know that you are so lucky to see this very day? So many people did not have this opportunity to contemplate their goals for 2018 but here you are…ALIVE AND WELL AND THRIVING (some of y’all said barely thriving…lol).

I don’t know about you but I definitely enjoyed 2017. It started out rough believe me. I ended 2016 in the hospital with an ovary being taken out. I literally rang in 2017 with an operation for ovarian tortion and I thought the rest of my year would be just as bad but I still hoped for the best. I set my goals for 2017 in the hospital bed and just cried my eyes myself to sleep. This year, I’m setting my goals for 2018 in a hotel room in New Orleans with my 13 month old son, my husband and my little sister and I can shout that GOD HAS BEEN GOOD! So, how do you plan on setting your goals for 2018?

Goals for 2018

When I sit down to set my goals for 2018, I try to keep these four rules in mind. They help me to stay focused and keep my goals as realistic as possible. I hope they help you to set your goals in 2018 as well.

  1. BE REALISTIC AND PLAN: Now, I’m not saying don’t set high expectations for yourself, but you know yourself and you know what’s possible and what’s clearly impossible. Set expectations that you can reach. When you set goals that are too unrealistic, you end up giving up on them so stay within reason. Secondly, PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! If you don’t plan for your goals, then they are just pipe dreams. So, when writing down your goals for 2018, make them realistic and write down action plans on how you are going to achieve them.
  2. MAKE A PUBLIC DECLARATION: When I wanted to start my blog, I went on Facebook and I posted that I was going live with my blog on 11.11.15. I couldn’t back out because all these people were expecting me to live up to my word and they kept asking me how the process was going. So, get on a social media platform and write your dreams out for the world to see. Don’t tell them how you’re going to do it, but tell them when and what you plan on doing.
  3. GET A GOAL-BUDDY: Honey, we have friends for everything else we do. When we want to party, we have a friend for that. When we want to lose weight, travel, eat, etc. we have friends for those things too…lol! Life is all about accountability so get a friend that you can share your goals with and that will keep you on task.
  4. PRAY OVER YOUR GOALS: Real talk, none of your goals in 2018 will be as successful as when you put Jesus in the mix. It’s cliche but true, with God all things are possible! So, take that vision, dream, plan, goals for 2018 to the feet of Jesus and ask him to bless it and give you the wisdom, strength and tenacity to finish and finish well.

Well, those are my four-hard rules for setting goals for 2018, and every year to follow. I hope they helped you in some way. I pray that 2018 will be a year where God enlarges your territory and blesses you and everything you touch. I pray Philippians 1:6 “that God, who has begun a good work in your life will complete it until the end“. I can’t wait to hear your stories and testimonies from 2018 and I thank you all for being a part of my journey. I love you guys so much for your support, prayers and love and I pray you continue this journey with Houseofodara into 2018.

Find me on Instagram at Oluwafunmifly or on Facebook at HouseofOdara and again, thank you for being you and for loving me as me! Let’s go into 2018 with pride, love and joy!!!!! #happynewyear

WWW: Shopping on a Dime

shopping on a dime

Shopping on a dime is easy to do especially when you’re shopping at Target

I just love Target’s WhoWhatWear Collection so much that I’m giving Target my money once a week. I’ve already done a post wearing one of their skirts from their collection and I’m back at it again like I never left. I love shopping on a dime and this collections allows me to do so and still have money for food afterwards. Don’t get me wrong, I love a great expensive piece but right now, I can’t afford to have every item of clothing be Chanel or YSL. So, I love to mix one high-end piece with some reasonably priced pieces. This look and this post is about looking good while shopping on a dime, and I want to show you ways to reinvent pieces and stretch your wardrobe and wallet a bit further.

When my fellow fashion blogger Flyygirlfashions asked to collaborate with me on a holiday look, I knew I wanted to incorporate the Whowhatwear collection from Target. The motto of this collection is to sell street-trendy clothes without your wallet paying for it months later. They have an array of gorgeous items including plus-size clothing. I ran to my local target and picked up a trendy ruffle top blouse and their women’s tie skirt. I put a gorgeous red Calvin Klein blazer dress over the look and finished it off with black tube socks and a patent leather two-tone booties. The two pieces from the Whowhatwear collection cost me under $40.00 and the good thing is I can always mix and match the pieces with other items in my closet. I told you looking good and shopping on a dime can actually have you looking like a trillion dollars.

shopping on a dime

My one rule for shopping on a dime is to always buy items that you can see yourself mixing with other items in your closet. Shopping on a dime will have learning how to reinvent every single thing in your closet (LOL). As a blogger, I don’t have money to waste on clothes every single shoot so I improvise and think of new ways to use what I already have. Like I said before, this overcoat is actually a dress that I was able to reuse in a different way. These two pieces from Target’s Whowhatwear collection are awesome because I can reuse them over and over again with other pieces from my collection. I plan on using the ruffle blouse as an undershirt on a pair of overalls that I just bought and the skirt will be reworn with a black turtleneck and thigh-high boots. So, remember to buy pieces you can see yourself wearing more than one way.

I love the way that Flyygirlfashions styled her Whowhatwear Frock coat with a pair of crushed velvet boots, plum pants, black turtleneck and a wide-brim hat. Her look is elevated street chic and I love the play of different colors and textures. Check her out on Instagram at Flyygirlfashions

How to Rock: Midi Skirts

how to wear midi skirt

A Classy Lady always has two midi skirts, one great sweater and a red lip

Hello chapped lips, chapped hands and chapped feet…Hello Winter. Today I want to talk about the perfect midi skirts that can be transitioned into classy winter wear. I want to show you where to find and how to wear midi skirts all season long. Okay, so you’re asking, what exactly are midi skirts? Well, read on and you’ll find out!

Midi skirts are also known as mid calf length skirts because they should hit you right at the top of your shin where your leg begins to thin out. Midi skirts should NOT stop at the thickets part of your legs or you will look stocky and anything below the top of the shin will have you looking like you’re going to a tent revival with your 10 kids (LOL). For our taller, thinner girls, any length midi skirt will work perfect for you because you have the legs to pull it off. Most midi skirts come either pleated or with a fuller skirt so keep the top as streamlined as possible. Wear either a form-fitting top or something that’s a little more revealing to counterbalance the conservative bottom.

how to wear midi skirt

I loved being able to wear my Forever21 midi skirt with a loose-fitting off-shoulder sweater. It was a warm, comfortable look that I was able to wear to church and then out for brunch with the girls. I tucked one corner into the skirt to make sure you saw my waist. What I love about a good midi skirt, beside the length, is that it’s always high-waisted so it sits at the smallest part of your waist. I was able to transition my midi skirt into a winter look by adding on a knit sweater and a pair of rose-gold metallic booties from Shein. My faux-fur bag also added to the feeling of a crisp cold day. Another way to transition your midi skirts is to pair them with a button down silk or chiffon blouse and then add a moto jacket to finish off the look. The faux leather moto jacket will give a little masculinity and edge to the hyper feminine look underneath, and keep you warm.

There is no right or wrong way to pair your midi skirts because as long as you feel good, you look good. If you recreate this look, tag me in it on Instagram at Oluwafunmifly. Forever Grateful: Lessons I’ve Learned This Past Year

ISSABIRTHDAYCELEBRATION and all I want to do is reflect on the lessons i’ve learned this past year

Y’all, I am a whole year older, a new year wiser and a new year happier. There is only one word that comes to mind today and that word is GRATEFUL! I am grateful for my life, I am grateful for my family, I am grateful for my friends and I am grateful for all of you! All I want to do is throw a dance party and praise God for all of His many blessings, love, protection and favor. As I reflect on the lessons i’ve learned this past year I am overwhelmed by how much i’ve grown, become more focused and learned to take things in stride. In this post I want to share with you the five lessons i’ve learned this past year of my life and I hope it helps you in some way.

lessons I've learned this past year

Here are the five lessons I’ve learned this past year and I’ll use my name FUNMI as an acronym:

  1. Focus on the Good: There are so many things that point you to the bad and teaches you to focus on what’s wrong with your life, but you have to train your mind to focus on the good all the time. The bad in your life that you don’t like, fix it if it can be fixed but don’t fixate on it. Allow the good to be on the forefront of your mind. Philippians 4:8 says that “whatever things are lovely, whatever things are pure, whatever things are of good report, that’s what you meditate on.” So, remind yourself that you are an AMAZING human and worthy of love, success and happiness.
  2. Understand Yourself: No one will know you better than you know you. I took this year out to find myself, to find out what I wanted to do with my life and figure out how I was going to make it happen. It doesn’t matter what age you are, introspection can happen at any time. So, find yourself, find your dream, find your purpose and everything else will fall into place.
  3. Never Give Up: You don’t know how many times this year I wanted to give up on this whole blogging endeavor. I am two years into this experience and sometimes I get so bogged down with the lack of “progress” that I just want to quit. But, I keep telling myself that someone else’s trajectory is not my trajectory; someone’s path is not my path. I have to remember lesson number one and focus on the good and that keeps me from giving up. Whether it’s your job, your husband, your friends, your dream, DON’T GIVE UP… success is right around the corner.
  4. Make Time For Family: In this world of busyness and Boss moves, we have to remember friends and family. We have to remember the people that helped us get where we are now. This one lesson I’ve learned this past year is very important! I have a one-year-old son and I have to make a choice to focus on him. I’m also married, and in the middle of all the whirlwind of my day, I have to make time to focus on him. We can’t win in the business, education or our sphere of influence and lose our families and friends in the process. Make time for what’s truly important.
  5. Influence Others: The best lesson I’ve learned this year is to influence those around me. I am just starting out in my journey in life with my baby, my husband and my blog but there is someone that needs what I have to offer. I try and use my influence for good and be an open book and an open door. If anyone needs help, advice or prayer, I’m always there to help. Real talk, the more you pour into others, the more you get out of it…SO GIVE OF YOURSELF SELFLESSLY!

lessons I've learned this past year

It’s a new year for me and these lessons I’ve learned this past year will go into 2018 with me. I will focus on the good, ignore the bad and love the ones who love me back. I plan on spending my birthday with my husband in Las Vegas for a couple of days and then coming back and hugging my son until he gets tired of me. I am so grateful to see another year and again, I am grateful for each and everyone of you who come week after week to read, comment and love on my blog and on me. You keep me going. Thank you!

Now that I’ve given you the five lessons I’ve learned this past year, I hope you’ll be able to take them into 2018 with you as well. My look today is very elegant and the color is perfect for the holidays and for my BURFDAY! I wanted to be elegant and dramatic. The skirt is Badgley Mischka from Dillards Department Store and my blouse was especially made by my friends and visionary Derek D’eandre. My heels are from Macy’s Department store. I hope you enjoyed this post and this look. Check out my last post on my favorite faux furs for this winter season HERE.

Hope y’all have a wonderful weekend. For collaborations email me at houseofodarablog@gmail.com and find me on Instagram at Oluwafunmifly to see all the behind-the-scenes Vegas shenanigans.

Budgetnista: Shopping On A Budget

shopping on a budget

Shopping on a budget can feel like sleeping on hardwood floors, it can be done, but it’s no fun!

Who else loves to go window shopping knowing you can’t afford anything you’re looking at?! This is my life about 99% of the time. I’m the girl that will stare at a pair of $1,500 YSL pumps and know I can never bring them home. My husband on the other hand only ever looks at what he can afford. I literally get energized looking at high-end items, but then I get smart and look for the knock-off/less expensive version. Shopping on a budget can be hard at times, but it can also be very, very rewarding.

Friend, don’t sleep on those knock-off YSL boots or the Aldo quilted bag, they are just as beautiful as the quilted Chanel bag and you don’t have to eat ramen noodles of two months after buying them. However, if you can afford the Chanel bag, please slide in my DM and ship one to me (LOL). This post will talk about shopping on a budget and recreate this look for waaaaayyyyy less.

shopping on a budget

When shopping on a budget, you can’t worry about labels. Labels are exactly that, Labels. Sometimes you can buy an off-brand items that’s even better than it’s more expensive counterpart. We can’t worry about what people think because your shoes aren’t red bottoms or or purse isn’t an expensive brand…if you like it, buy it! This outfit is from Sax Fifth and cost over a thousand dollars (I DID NOT BUY IT BUT IT WAS PULLED FOR THIS SHOOT).

CLICK ON DESCRIPTION TO SHOP THIS LOOK:

Theory Pink Velvet Blazer: $495.00

Theory Belted Cigarette Pants: $395.00

Alice + Olivia Classic Tee: $125.00

Now, this look is amazing but if you don’t have that kind of money to spend on only one outfit, you can find a similar look for more than half the price. Another thing to remember when shopping on a budget is be ready to look. Search online, in different stores and don’t be afraid to take the picture of the item to the store and ask if they have something similar to it.

The last thing to remember when shopping on a  budget is to STICK TO THAT BUDGET! When you get out there you will se a lot of tempting options, but make a budget and don’t stray away from it. I like to take the exact amount of cash I plan on spending or put the exact amount on my Regions Now Card. That way, I can’t spend what I don’t physically have. Also, don’t be afraid to thrift or visit Plato’s closet for great second-hand items. I hope this post was helpful in some way and let me know if you decide to recreate this look.
