REMIXED: How to Style Pants Two Different Ways

“I don’t wear the same thing twice but I do wear the same thing more than once.”

When I was younger, my life goal was not to ever wear the same pants, dress or shoes more than once. I just wish I could go back and slap myself and say, girl get a grip and save your money. I spent every little dime on clothes and shoes because I thought I had to have something new every single day. Well, I’m older and wiser and I’ve come to the realization I don’t have to wear an outfit twice but I can definitely wear my favorite pieces more than one time.

One piece of wisdom I give to anybody that asks for fashion advice is to buy solid every-day pieces. Purchase a great pair of pants, a little black dress (LBD), a button-down shirt and a sensible but sexy pair of heels. These solid pieces can be mixed and remixed to make a bunch of different looks. The pair of polk-dot pants I’m wearing were purchased because I knew I could wear it so many different ways.

pants

In the first look, I subtly mixed prints. I styled my polka-dot pants with a polka-dot H&M men’s button down shirt. I brought in color in my little lip clutch and a pair of bright red Jessica Simpson heels. The starry-night cap brought this whole look together. The next way I styled these solid every-day pants was with an off-shoulder red sweater. I kept the bag and heels the same but added a wide brimmed hat or a more elegant feel. Both looks are so easy to copy and even easier to wear. A great pair of pants always adds more variety and selection to your closet.

Now, which styling of these every-day pants did you like better? Which way would you see yourself wearing the polk-dot pants or would yo have worn it differently? Remember to pick solid pieces that you can interchange and mix for different and unique looks. FYI, If you have a little money after picking up that LBD, those awesome pants, that button-down and those sexy heels, pick up a nice blazer and your closet will be complete. It’s February but New Years Goals should be all year around, if you didn’t read my post on how to set realistic goals, click HERE!

NYFW: The Super Bowl Championship for designers and creatives

“Excuse me sir, but my Super Bowl is called New York Fashion Week and it’s starts TODAY!”

For those who don’t follow fashion as closely as some others do, the biggest events in fashion happen twice a year in the “big four” fashion mecca’s, New York, London, Paris, and Milan. The concept of fashion week began in London but the tradition has been “official” since 1943 when New York held it’s first official fashion week. Each fashion week lasts an actual week and allows buyers and influencers a taste of what’s upcoming in fashion and trends for the the next season.

Tickets for major shows are expensive and front row seats are as coveted as sleep after a week of having a newborn (lol)!. I will not be going this year, but I will get to enjoy the shows via live stream and runway photos from the show. You can watch the shows along with me HERE and view the official schedule for NYFW. BUT, if I were going, this outfit would be the first look I would sashay around the streets of New York in and shut it down.

fashion week

I kept this look feminine but edgy with a cute but rich floral jacquard peplum hem dress, and my on-trend heels with socks. This look is a little nod to my style. I love hyper-feminine clothing and all things pink but I also have a wild side (grrrr). What a perfect way to start off the first day of New York Fashion Week than in this outfit that’s the embodiment of all that is me.

My dress is not for sale anymore but I did link two of my favorite girly looks that you can easily pair with a pair of socks and my platform heels and then add a great coat to finish it off. One thing I love to do with a sleeveless dress during the winter is to pair it with a blouse as an undershirt. This one was made by my Friend Derek DeAndre and you can find more of his work Here.  I am putting the schedule for Fashion Week below and don’t be afraid to check other blogs and watch the live streams to find out what will be trending soon. I can’t wait until Next season when you and I both can meet up and have drinks before our first NYFW show. Check out my last blog post on my Super Bowl style HERE.

Championship 2018: Food and Fashion for Super Bowl Sunday

super bowl 2018

“I’m not a football fan but i’m going hard for Super Bowl 2018..clearly ONLY for the food and the fashion!”

Who will be watching the Super Bowl game tonight? My husband is at church right now praying for a win for his favorite team while I’m trying to think of the best appetizers and drinks to make his night a spectacular one. My thought is even If his team doesn’t win, at least he’ll eat good and get to view my fabulous outfits (yes, i’m planning my own half-time runway show). So, who are you rooting for?! Either, way, I hope these recipes puts you in a good mood no matter how good or bad or your team does tonight.

Any Super Bowl party is not complete without four items and one of them is soooo good even the people who don’t eat meat will dig in. I always make oven-baked wings, pulled pork nachos, some sort of chip and dip and stuffed mushrooms for my vegetarian friends.

Since it’s the Super Bowl, my outfit is army-inspired because we are here to fight! I found these army-pants at my local thrift store and fell in love with them. I knew I wanted to style them for the blog because camouflage print goes with just about anything.

FirstLady: Jackie-O Inspired Looks

Nothing screams demure, modest and future First Lady like an amazing skirt suit

I remember when Princess Diana died. My mum was a die-hard lover of her and her family. What she admired most about the beautiful Diana was her sense of social justice and her fashion-sense. I know I got my love of fashion from my mum. Princess Diana could always be seen in an amazing skirt suit or a beautiful dress that was reminiscent of my one of my favorite style icons, Jackie Kennedy Onassis. So, on this State of the Union night, I wanted to go for a classy and classic look channeling one of our First Lady’s Jackie Kennedy O.

From Diana, to her future daughter-in-law Kate Middleton, to even our new First Lady, (God bless her soul), Melania Trump, Jackie’s style essence continues to stand the test of time. The Skirt Suit became “a thing” because she wore it with class, dignity and beauty. My look today is inspired by her effortless slay and beautiful style.

SLIDE THROUGH FOR JACKIE-O INSPIRED LOOKS

Her style is timeless. Even to this day, her style is still emulated and recreated because modesty, grace and elegance can never go out of style. FYI the notorious Kim Kardashian also recreated some of Jackie’s most iconic looks. Here is my interpretation in my fav skirt suit and I hope I did it justice. Also, click to see and shop some of the most popular skirt suits online.

Now, how did I do?! Remember classic never goes out of style and modesty is NOT a four-letter word. This look would be great for a day at the office or even Sunday service. It’s elegant, ladylike, feminine and still a little sexy. If you recreate this look, tag me on Instagram or on Facebook. Check out my last post on the best jeans to flatter that figure HERE!

BOSSED UP: Pants Suits For The Everyday Woman

You know a boss lady when she struts into the room suited and booted in a well-fitted pantsuit”

Soap Box Moment: For so long, women have worked harder or as hard as men but made statistically less dollar for dollar than their counterparts. Women have been marginalized, put down, and harassed simply because of their sex. Well women, It’s time for us to put on our pantsuits and fight back against every injustice, and harassment anyone would try to throw our way. The Golden Globes last night made me so proud to be a W-O-M-A-N!

I was almost in tears when Oprah said in her speech, “So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon…” a day where our truths and our words will set us free from discrimination. Almost every woman came, dressed in all black, in solidarity against the sexual abuses that has been happening in Hollywood for centuries. I wore all black as I watched from my home in solidarity with them as well. Remember, no matter how scared you are to speak out, “your truth is the most powerful tool you will ever have” so SPEAK OUT and don’t let anyone ever shut you down as a woman…YOUR VOICE IS POWERFUL!

Now, let me get off my soap box and talk about the fashion on the red carpet and some of my favorite looks…fyi some of the women had on pantsuits.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I just loved Kyra Sedgwick’s pantsuit so much. It fit her like a glove and accentuated her tiny waist and long legs. It also cemented the fact that women are here to stay, a force to be reckoned with and not to be taken lightly. To me a well-fit pantsuit will speak volumes and louder than anything else you can say.

My pantsuit is vintage but I wanted to give you some of the fabulous options that i’ve been lusting over this season.

I hope this post motivated you in some way to be a BOSS WOMAN. Check out the pantsuits I posted and don’t be afraid to dress like an adult every now and then. Forever Grateful: Lessons I’ve Learned This Past Year

ISSABIRTHDAYCELEBRATION and all I want to do is reflect on the lessons i’ve learned this past year

Y’all, I am a whole year older, a new year wiser and a new year happier. There is only one word that comes to mind today and that word is GRATEFUL! I am grateful for my life, I am grateful for my family, I am grateful for my friends and I am grateful for all of you! All I want to do is throw a dance party and praise God for all of His many blessings, love, protection and favor. As I reflect on the lessons i’ve learned this past year I am overwhelmed by how much i’ve grown, become more focused and learned to take things in stride. In this post I want to share with you the five lessons i’ve learned this past year of my life and I hope it helps you in some way.

lessons I've learned this past year

Here are the five lessons I’ve learned this past year and I’ll use my name FUNMI as an acronym:

  1. Focus on the Good: There are so many things that point you to the bad and teaches you to focus on what’s wrong with your life, but you have to train your mind to focus on the good all the time. The bad in your life that you don’t like, fix it if it can be fixed but don’t fixate on it. Allow the good to be on the forefront of your mind. Philippians 4:8 says that “whatever things are lovely, whatever things are pure, whatever things are of good report, that’s what you meditate on.” So, remind yourself that you are an AMAZING human and worthy of love, success and happiness.
  2. Understand Yourself: No one will know you better than you know you. I took this year out to find myself, to find out what I wanted to do with my life and figure out how I was going to make it happen. It doesn’t matter what age you are, introspection can happen at any time. So, find yourself, find your dream, find your purpose and everything else will fall into place.
  3. Never Give Up: You don’t know how many times this year I wanted to give up on this whole blogging endeavor. I am two years into this experience and sometimes I get so bogged down with the lack of “progress” that I just want to quit. But, I keep telling myself that someone else’s trajectory is not my trajectory; someone’s path is not my path. I have to remember lesson number one and focus on the good and that keeps me from giving up. Whether it’s your job, your husband, your friends, your dream, DON’T GIVE UP… success is right around the corner.
  4. Make Time For Family: In this world of busyness and Boss moves, we have to remember friends and family. We have to remember the people that helped us get where we are now. This one lesson I’ve learned this past year is very important! I have a one-year-old son and I have to make a choice to focus on him. I’m also married, and in the middle of all the whirlwind of my day, I have to make time to focus on him. We can’t win in the business, education or our sphere of influence and lose our families and friends in the process. Make time for what’s truly important.
  5. Influence Others: The best lesson I’ve learned this year is to influence those around me. I am just starting out in my journey in life with my baby, my husband and my blog but there is someone that needs what I have to offer. I try and use my influence for good and be an open book and an open door. If anyone needs help, advice or prayer, I’m always there to help. Real talk, the more you pour into others, the more you get out of it…SO GIVE OF YOURSELF SELFLESSLY!

lessons I've learned this past year

It’s a new year for me and these lessons I’ve learned this past year will go into 2018 with me. I will focus on the good, ignore the bad and love the ones who love me back. I plan on spending my birthday with my husband in Las Vegas for a couple of days and then coming back and hugging my son until he gets tired of me. I am so grateful to see another year and again, I am grateful for each and everyone of you who come week after week to read, comment and love on my blog and on me. You keep me going. Thank you!

Now that I’ve given you the five lessons I’ve learned this past year, I hope you’ll be able to take them into 2018 with you as well. My look today is very elegant and the color is perfect for the holidays and for my BURFDAY! I wanted to be elegant and dramatic. The skirt is Badgley Mischka from Dillards Department Store and my blouse was especially made by my friends and visionary Derek D’eandre. My heels are from Macy’s Department store. I hope you enjoyed this post and this look. Check out my last post on my favorite faux furs for this winter season HERE.

Hope y’all have a wonderful weekend. For collaborations email me at houseofodarablog@gmail.com and find me on Instagram at Oluwafunmifly to see all the behind-the-scenes Vegas shenanigans.

FurryFriends: My Favorite Faux Furs

This list of my favorite faux furs are sure to make any girl swoon

Y’all it’s winter. Well, not really for us down in the South but don’t let that stop you from pulling out your furs. This post is all about my favorite faux furs this season and how you can wear them. Listen Linda, don’t log off, I won’t have you looking like an 80’s rapper I promise. Keep reading and get ready to purchase one or more of my favorite faux furs this season.

When it comes to wearing Fur, less is more. If you’re not going for a really dramatic look or a runway look, you can wear fur and not look over the top. Remember, fur can be just around the collar of a jacket or a fur throw over your shoulder. Nothing looks as good as a leather jacket with a fur collar. Whether your fur is real or faux, don’t be afraid to rock it.

This look I have on is the over-the-top fur look but like I said, you can make it more subdued. Day 1: The Secret to Blogging

Secret to Blogging

The Secret to blogging is an 11 letter word that brings a sigh to almost every person who hears it…CONSISTENCY!”

So, Here I am almost three years into blogging and I’m still learning new things every single day. Who knew fashion blogging was NOT as glamorous as I thought it would be?. It’s just hard work, long nights and little recognition for a long time. Let me tell you, blogging takes a toll on you mentally, emotionally and physically. When you see these fashion bloggers on the web with 100K plus followers, they have put in years of hard work, long nights and countless hours building their brand. So, for anyone that wants to start a blog, whether it’s fashion, lifestyle, sports or anything in-between, remember the secret to blogging is consistency.

Today, I want to focus on some of the secrets to blogging that have helped me along the way, some of my favorite editing apps, and the bloggers that have inspired me on my journey. FYI, This is my birthday week so I plan on being consistent this week and giving you looks after looks. Also, all gifts can be shipped directly to me (I take MOOLAH)! Jokes aside, I hope these secrets to blogging will help you in one way or another.

secret to blogging

PLATFORMS:

The first secret to blogging is to find a platform that works better for you. There are so many sites that allow you to host your blog on them for FREE. WordPress has a free platform and you can sign up today with just a couple of simple steps. WIX is also one of the top blogging platforms out there for beginner bloggers with a free feature for you as well. The last one I would recommend is Weebly. These are my three favorite, so if you are dreaming about your own blog, give them a try.

CAMERAS:

Now, no matter what kind of blogging you plan on doing, you will need a camera. You want to have your own pictures and not have to rely on stock photography or pictures from the internet. If you are a fashion blogger, a good camera is a must-have. I am a Canon fanatic and I highly recommend the DSLR’s because they are easy to use and take great photos. The Rebel series is my favorite. I recently bought the Canon T6i on Amazon and you can purchase it HERE. I shoot all my photos with either the T6i or my EOS M with a prime lens or a 18-55MM lens or my long range 75-300MM lens. My prime lens is usually for close up portrait photography. This bundle from Amazon comes with a lot of great features and other products as well. You won’t find it cheaper any where else. But, if you can’t afford that camera, there is also a Canon Powershot for $219.99 HERE. But, if you really don’t want to shell out money until you absolutely have to, use your Iphone or Android camera and edit it until you can splurge on a camera. Let’s go to the most important secret to blogging: editing!

EDITING:

Editing is one of the most important secret to blogging that you will ever find out. Most bloggers edit their photos to the GAWDS. they edit everything from their nail polish all the way up to the color of the sky above them. Editing is CLUTCH. I am doing a side-by side comparison of a picture I recently shot with my Canon T6i. It was shot with my 18-55MM lens in a dark parking deck with very low light. Another tip, I always shoot in both RAW and JPG so that I will be able to edit my pictures on both my phone and in Lightroom or Photoshop. I made sure my shutter speed was low to let in more light and my ISO was low so that I didn’t get any distortion. I then took it into Photoshop and edited it. Y’all, one of the biggest secret to blogging is that most of these editing tricks can be done ON YOUR PHONE (HURRAY)!

Can you see the difference a little editing can do to a picture? Don’t I look like a barbie in that edited pic (you better say YES, LOL). Now, Here are my favorite editing platforms that can be done simply on your phone:

  1. Photoshop Express: You can download it straight to your phone and it allows you to do minor editing to your photos. You can fix the exposure, bring in more darks or whites, smooth your skin and lots of other cool features.
  2. Facetune: Man, this is one of my favorite apps. It is not free but it is definitely worth it. This app will smooth your skin like crazy. It will allow you to bring details out in your clothes, makeup or background. Oh, and whiten your teeth which everyone loves to do.
  3. Snapseed: So do you ever see a spot on your dress you want to take out or do you want to darken the background but still highlight your face? This app is for you. I love fixing minor details in Snapseed.
  4. VSCO: I just love this app because it allows me to put great filters on my photos. Great for food or scenic shots.
  5. LightroomCC: This app is comparable to Photoshop Express and has great effect filters.

Remember to not over edit or your pictures will look unrealistic, unless that’s the look you are going for. Once you start editing, you will find a look that you like. Some people like their pictures darker and some people love lighter pictures, so find your editing style and stick to it; this will be your photo signature.

INFLUENCERS:

Another secret to blogging is to find people that inspire you to be better and to keep going. Remember in the beginning I told you the biggest secret to blogging was Consistency, keep that in mind when finding blogger inspirations. Find someone that is doing what you would like to do and watch how consistent they are in their craft. They never take weeks or even days off; they are always in your face with post after post. Consistency is key. In this day and age with so many people blogging, you have to find your niche, stand out in it, and keep working at it. People want to see that you are consistent and passionate about what you are saying and doing. They also love to see your progression as you grow, so show them that as well. Here are some bloggers that inspire me every day to keep going and give me major LIFE with all their posts:

  1. Micah Gianneli: This lady is BOSS every single day with every single post. She is always serving looks from upscale to street style.
  2. Wendyslookbook: She was one of my first blogger crushes. Her style is so ladylike and elegant you can’t help but feel like you know her.
  3. Titiola Sogunro: My blogger BFF I love her personality, drive and of course her style. Blogging is such a competitive art but it’s always good to find people who are willing to help others out. Titi is bae!
  4. Kyrzayda Rodriguez: Man or man this lady knows how to slay. She is battling cancer right now and is so open about her battle and journey. Her style is impeccable and she’s an amazing human.
  5. Holly: Okay, if you want a fresh new look at fashion or over the top styling, she is the one to follow. Her color blocking and textures are always sublime.
  6. Juliette Foxx: I recently started following this beauty but OMG style on 1000%. Her street style always inspires me to push the envelope when it comes to dressing myself.

Because i’m a fashion blogger, I follow people that inspire me daily. Like I said, find someone in your niche and follow them. Never be afraid to slide in their DM and ask for advice or help. The last secret to blogging is to stay humble and engage with every single follower. A simple thank you to a comment on a photo goes a long way. Follow other bloggers, comment on their post, find Facebook groups to join and enjoy the journey. Write down why you want to begin this blogging journey and keep that in mind whenever the road gets bumpy and you want to quit.

I hope this post helped you in some way. I love all of you who visit this blog, visit my instagram and comment and like my post. You all are my real inspiration to keep going and keep striving for success.

Budgetnista: Shopping On A Budget

shopping on a budget

Shopping on a budget can feel like sleeping on hardwood floors, it can be done, but it’s no fun!

Who else loves to go window shopping knowing you can’t afford anything you’re looking at?! This is my life about 99% of the time. I’m the girl that will stare at a pair of $1,500 YSL pumps and know I can never bring them home. My husband on the other hand only ever looks at what he can afford. I literally get energized looking at high-end items, but then I get smart and look for the knock-off/less expensive version. Shopping on a budget can be hard at times, but it can also be very, very rewarding.

Friend, don’t sleep on those knock-off YSL boots or the Aldo quilted bag, they are just as beautiful as the quilted Chanel bag and you don’t have to eat ramen noodles of two months after buying them. However, if you can afford the Chanel bag, please slide in my DM and ship one to me (LOL). This post will talk about shopping on a budget and recreate this look for waaaaayyyyy less.

shopping on a budget

When shopping on a budget, you can’t worry about labels. Labels are exactly that, Labels. Sometimes you can buy an off-brand items that’s even better than it’s more expensive counterpart. We can’t worry about what people think because your shoes aren’t red bottoms or or purse isn’t an expensive brand…if you like it, buy it! This outfit is from Sax Fifth and cost over a thousand dollars (I DID NOT BUY IT BUT IT WAS PULLED FOR THIS SHOOT).

CLICK ON DESCRIPTION TO SHOP THIS LOOK:

Theory Pink Velvet Blazer: $495.00

Theory Belted Cigarette Pants: $395.00

Alice + Olivia Classic Tee: $125.00

Now, this look is amazing but if you don’t have that kind of money to spend on only one outfit, you can find a similar look for more than half the price. Another thing to remember when shopping on a budget is be ready to look. Search online, in different stores and don’t be afraid to take the picture of the item to the store and ask if they have something similar to it.

The last thing to remember when shopping on a  budget is to STICK TO THAT BUDGET! When you get out there you will se a lot of tempting options, but make a budget and don’t stray away from it. I like to take the exact amount of cash I plan on spending or put the exact amount on my Regions Now Card. That way, I can’t spend what I don’t physically have. Also, don’t be afraid to thrift or visit Plato’s closet for great second-hand items. I hope this post was helpful in some way and let me know if you decide to recreate this look. “Inexpensive Dresses for the Holidays is the theme of this show…stay tuned!”

Listen Linda, I don’t know about you, but Thanksgiving was a working holiday for me. For the first time in years, I didn’t spend it with my family but I was in Atlanta working with Macy’s. It was amazing but I definitely missed all the love, food and family and hopefully next year i’ll be with them for Thanksgiving. However, I did enjoy two big plates the next day and I did get to enjoy Black Friday shopping with the masses. How was your Thanksgiving? I hope it was amazing. I finished off the look with a staple fuchsia Adachic Design quilted holiday clutch. This look was so easy to put together and is perfect for any holiday party that you get invited to attend.

Remember today is Small Business Saturday so visit your local boutiques and shops and spend some cash. Small businesses are the backbone of your communities and cities and they deserve all the support they can get. I am wearing a purse from a local business owner in Montgomery, Alabama. I did a blog post about them and you can read about it and shop their bags HERE. Have a good rest of your weekend and let me know what you think of this look.
