Form-Fitting…No Problem

“I like my clothes like I like my money, stretchable”

Let’s jump right into one of my favorite topics…Lycra. Okay, today i’m talking about what to look for when you buy form-fitting jeans and dresses and how to wear it without looking round or lumpy. As a new mummy, wearing stretch denim or dresses scared me because of my weight gain and the shape of my new body. Big dresses and sweats were my BFF’s until I realized I could still be a hot mama I just needed to pick the right items, pair it well and accentuate the good.

You don’t have to be afraid of stretch material because it’s a actually a girls best friend. When buying a pair of jeans, a 3-4% stretch is what you need. The lycra will help shape your legs and stomach and give you a great shape. Stretch is your BFF whether you are curvy, petite, tall or in-between.

When designers Daniel and Derek of SplashedbyDKG sent me a dress to blog for them, I almost screamed when I saw that it was a dark blue stretchy material. I thought how am I going to wear this without making my body look round? Well, duh, when in doubt, BELT IT.

The beautiful thing about belts is that they help cinch in that waist and give the illusion of an hourglass figure. You want to wear the belt at the smallest part of your waistline and let the magic happen. After I put the dress on and let go of my phobia, I realized it shaped to me so well and the slinky material was flattering as well as super comfortable. The thing I was so afraid of ended being my favorite asset. I found a pair of sexy Forever21 heels, a tulle sock and my fur jacket to add a little bit more drama to this look and voila, magic!. The dress will be sold at the Magic City Market today from 12-4 at the Goldstein and Cohen Building at 406 19th St Ensley, Birmingham, AL 35218. I hope to see you guys there.

So, don’t be afraid of form-fitting clothes. Learn to pair them with something that accentuates the good, like a great belt or a crop jacket, blazer or cape. My friend Aliscia, who is a bit curvier paired her with a trench and gold belt. She made the look her own and killed it as well. This is the same dress, two different body shapes, two different styles but both are amazing.

Let me know if I’ll be seeing you at 12PM at the Magic City Market and come find me if you come. Let me know if you plan on recreating this beautiful look and again, don’t be afraid of the stretch, it can be your best friend if done the right way. Is That Gucci?!

“It’s not real, I just make it look good”

This blog is about how I found my Gucci-inspired bag for thousands less….get ready, get ready, get ready!

My look today is all about real vs. fake. I’ve always been one of those people who hated anything fake…especially fake bags. But, the way my budget is set up, I can’t afford real Gucci or real Chanel (FYI if you want to send me a real Chanel, DM me). So, when I found this great faux-Gucci bag for $41.99 I snatched it up.

This authentic Gucci Dionysus retails for $3,600 and if you have the money, by all means buy it and buy one for me. But, if you’re struggle booty like me, you love a good knock-off.

When I wore my Gucci-inspired bag for the first time, I got so many compliments on it. I thought to myself, “It may not be real, I just know how to make it look EXTRA TASTY”.

Amazon has a great Dionysus inspired bag for…WAIT FOR IT…. $21.99 (JESUS IS LORD). Now, let’s get into my look and the links to purchase these great pieces. Like I said in my last Fall-inspred post, this season is all about layering. You can turn summer pieces into fall pieces by just layering it. I paired a gingham off-shoulder ruffle sleeve blouse with a great pair of black distressed jeans and a grey crop-top shirt to make this fall look. I added my Gucci-inspired bag and black heels to complete this easy-breezy night out with the girls ensemble.

Gingham Off-the-Shoulder Top

I wore a pair of heeled sandals but you can mix it up with a colorful shoe or booties. This outfit is everything and easy to recreate so, go for it.

Let me know if you recreate this easy-breezy look and share with all your fashion-loving friends. For collaborations or questions, email me at houseofodarablog@gmail.com. Comment below and let me know what other looks you would love to see styled.

Sweater Weather

“I can smell Autumn dancing in the breeze”

Happy Sunday Lovies, please take a minute and say a prayer for this planet that we inhabit. There have been natural disasters from Houston, TX all the way to Sierra Leone, Africa. Let’s pray for the wellbeing and restoration of health, home and family for those affected by the storms world-wide.

This weeks look is another simple one. It’s all about sweaters and fall boots. I found a gold knitted sweater at my local Salvation Army thrift store and knew it would be perfect for the Fall weather. The sweater is not too heavy and could be worn with a undershirt beneath it. The gold color is also one of my favorites for the Fall. I put it with a Forever21 red pleated skirt and a short brown pair of old Jessica Simpson booties. I love this simple look.

Linked below is a F21 pleated skirt and a comparable sweater both for $15.99. I also linked a pair of boots that are perfect for the fall. My vintage Dooney and Bourke is old but any great leather bag would go perfect with this look.

Pleated Mini Skirt    Waffle Knit Sweater

Remember Fall is all about layering. My skirt is short and my sweater is long and warm. The booties are short because it’s not cold enough for thigh-highs. Play round with summer items you have in your closet and pair them with boots, sweater, jackets, etc…layer, layer, layer. Let me know what you think of this look and how you plan on revamping your summer clothes into Fall pieces.

Shakara.FAB

“Entrepreneur: someone who jumps off a cliff and builds a plane on their way down”

I once heard someone say if you don’t see a door, then build one and walk though it. As humans, we like to sit there and wait and wait and wait for a door to arrive. FYI, It’s never coming. Get up and make room for yourself.

I saw a movie called “Joy” yesterday and it motivated me to go for greatness. It was about the life of Joy Mangano, a business woman, author, entrepreneur, and inventor. She began as a broke, mother of two, divorcee with a crazy family that never supported her dreams. She took all the lemons life gave her and made a million dollar jar of lemonade. This movie motivated me like never before. What I got from it is that if you want something, you have to get up and GRAB IT FOR YOURSELF!

Now, Welcome the new Endeavor that I am going to make a multimillion dollar industry: Shakara FAB. My sister and I were born in Lagos, Nigeria and have always had a passion for fashion, entrepreneurship and bringing our culture to those around us. We have lived in the US for 20 plus years and now after much work, prayer and determination, we are going to make this vision a reality.

We have teamed up with our cousin Ashlen of HeyGirlHey and our close family friend Claudia Olojo of King_Queen_Melenin. Our mission is to bring authentic, African-made clothing to our friends, family and people in our sphere of influence. Shakira FAB will be a success because we will make it so by the grace of God.

This look is one of the dresses that will be available from petite to plus size. I love the shape of this dress and the way it accentuates your waist and hips. It gives you an hourglass shape even if you don’t really have one (like me). Now, let’s talk, comment below what you would like to see from us and what problems you want fixed with the fashion industry and it’s representation of all sizes and shapes. We will take your comments and make sure our designs fits everyone.

So, would you wear this dress?! Why or why not, and what would you like to see from our brand Shakara FAB. Again, thank you all for all your support and help. We love your feedback and input and will use it to better us and give you what you want.

D.4.Dedication

“You can’t reach the top without climbing the steps”

Happy Labor day Lovies! I hope you all have a safe and productive day, filled with food, fun, family and fashion. Okay, so you know that saying that you can’t wear white after labor day, throw it out the window with along with all the other antiquated fashion rules. In the winter, I love an all white outfit with white trimmed fur…Yes, i’m that girl… #teamoverthetop.

This blog post is called “Dedication” because I want to talk about becoming a more dedicated person. So you know that girl or guy that’s always at conferences, reading all the self-help books but never does anything with it? I used to be that person. I couldn’t dedicate myself to anything for long periods of time. I wanted the success without the handwork. Who else is like that? I wanted to be at the top of the mountain without having to actually climb it. Life DOES NOT work that way. Whatever you want to accomplish, you have to put in hard work and dedication. The first thing that helped me become more dedicated was coming up with a calendar of things I want to do daily. The second thing was setting aside a day to work on one project. No matter what, every Monday, I work on my blog; no excuses, no procrastination. So, find a day of the week to dedicate yourself to ONE goal and JUST DO IT!

Today’s look is simple and very easy to replicate. If you have a summer dress, pull it out of your closet and pair it with a pair of booties for a nice Fall look. You can add a nice jacket or tights if the weather is a bit more chilly. I have found some perfect summer dresses on sale both are under $25.00 and the booties are PERFECT for a transitional look everyone will envy.

Floral Lace-Trim Dress      Plus Size Floral Shirt Dress       Pointed Toe Stiletto Boots

Like I said, both dresses are perfect transitional pieces. A little belt can take the outfit a long way and fyi, those boots are a must-have for fall because they are really comfortable and absolutely gorgeous. What are some Fall looks you are looking forward to this year? Don’t forget to check out my Fall Must-Haves: HERE

So, Let’s make this September the month of Dedication to our goals and dreams. Let me know what goals you’re going to dedicate your time, effort and money into and how you plan on doing it. NewMonth.Who’sThis?

“New Month, New hair, Who is this?”

Hello September, I’ve been waiting on you at the door. I am so ready for cooler weather and Fall season all summer long. In my hometown, we’ve been experiencing thunderstorms and last night we even had a tornado watch. I woke up this morning to torn branches and debris everywhere. My heart and prayer and support goes out to those in Texas suffering under the destruction of Hurricane Harvey. If you live in Birmingham, please support by going to the Boutwell Auditorium at 1930 Reverend Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd, Birmingham, AL 35203. They are asking for canned goods, perishable items, clothes, etc that they can send to those in need. They will be accepting donations until Sunday evening. If you live in any other state or city, please find out where you can donate and be a hand in need.

Did you all catch my last blog on my favorite Fall item? If you didn’t, click HERE. This look today is sponsored by my favorite designers Derek and Daniel of Splashed by DKG. I am wearing their fabulous denim kimono skater blouse. I love the shape of this piece. I love the big beautiful bell sleeves and the structured bottom of the blouse. I belted it to give it some shape and accentuate my waist. I’ve seen it worn unbelted and that looked great as well. I completed the look with some lace shorts underneath and these ultra sexy jean boots from Amazon.

This look is so different from my normal wear but that’s the beauty of style. Never be afraid to mix it up and step out of your comfort zone. Check out their website HERE for buying options and to look at their other pieces.

So, what’s something new you plan on doing this month that you’ve never done before? Whether it’s changing your wardrobe, exercising more, meeting new people or simply getting out more, in the words of Michal Jordan…JUST DO IT! I pray this month is blessed, full of favor and riches.

Fall.Into.Fashion

“Hoodies, Bonfires, Cuddling…Fall is here”

I stepped outside of my apartment Saturday and It was legitimately not hot…lol!. Okay, it wasn’t sweater or even jacket weather, but I felt a small coolness in the air. Here in the South, we hardly ever get a REAL Fall or a REAL Winter. In the South, Summer is King! Still, we have to get ready for some Fall fashion, and I am giving you some of the must-haves for this season. For my friends in the North, i’m sure you are already ready for the cooler weather.

Okay, the first item I stock up on in the Fall and Winter are booties. I love them in every color, style and shape. I own a lot of them but the one i’m crushing on this season is a pair of lace up, imitation Yeezy Season IV ankle boots. I found a pair at Forever21 and they were a must buy. Kim K has been wearing them all summer long. Kim if you are reading this, please send me a pair…i’ll DM you my info (send prayers up y’all). The pair from Forever21 is a LOT cheaper.

So, i’m obsessed with every pair of booties on this list. But, for those who want a little more coverage on their legs, knee and thigh-high boots are a must have. I have a pair of silver ones on the list that are a bit daring but I plan on wearing them SOON!:

Libby Peeptoe Sock Thigh High BootsVictoria Denim Peeptoe Thigh High Boots

Next, another of my Fall must-haves is a good faux-fur jacket and Trench Coat:

Alisha Shaggy Faux Fur CoatEmily Faux Fur Collar Wool Look CoatVanessa Double Breasted Belted Trench Coat

Okay, so it is definitely time for sweaters and sweater dresses. Even though I am NOT a sweater dress person, I know how easy, comfortable and warm they can be, especially with a pair of boots. Here are some affordable sweaters and sweater dresses:

Poppy Ruffle Sleeve Sweater
Black Color Block Bell Sleeve Ruffle Hem Sweater DressFold Over Bardot Sweater Dress

Another Fall must-haves are all the accessories and accouterments that come along with cooler weather. I live for a good scarf, leggings, tights, leg warmers and gloves. Also I love a super sturdy winter bag:
Graphic Print Oversized Scarf

Mia Faux Fur Cross Body Bag

Lastly, I want to give some ON TREND buys that I have found on Amazon for way less. These are trends that have debuted on the runway for Fall/Winter 2017. I’m giving you the four trends that I like so far and will be wearing. Remember, not every trend has to be followed; find what fits you and your style best. The first trend is dark, romantic florals. Next is fringe; who doesn’t love fabric that moves. Next is the cold or one shoulder look. Lastly is the Glitter-bomb trend (YAY)! Anything with glitter is my friend and I love this last dress because it’s fringe and glitter mixed together. Look at the Fall trends for 2017 and pick which ones you like and rock it with your bad self!

Remember, during the Fall and Winter, layer as much as possible. Put on an under shirt with an oversized sweater, a pair of great jeans or leggings and some booties, and you’ll be fashionable and warm all winter long. All these looks are affordable and will have you looking fabulous and stylish. So, what are you looking forward to purchasing and wearing this Fall/Winter season? Comment below and let me know.

Cool.Mum

“Mum jeans are so last season…I’m a cool mum!”

Okay, this jumpsuit is not for the faint of heart. LOL! Being a new mum is hard, beautiful, rewarding and did I mention HARD. I think the hardest part for me was getting my sexy back. Mommies, you have to remember how you snatched your hubby up…you can’t go from hottie to hot-mess (sigh). Men are visual…like very visual so you gotta maintain that flyness. You have to learn how to dress for that extra body weight and accentuate the good. I am queen of hiding the bad (FY…control top panties and a GOOD bra).

When I found this jumpsuit on Amazon and read the reviews, I knew it would be perfect for a date night with my husband. After having Sammy, I still have 15lbs to lose, so I was looking for something that was not tight on my legs or stomach, made me look taller but also had sex appeal. This jumpsuit was it. I kept the styling very simple and let the colors and stripes speak for me. FYI This jumpsuit is only $24.99 with Amazon Prime.

CLICK PICTURES FOR PRODUCT LINKS

Remember, try and dress for the body you have. If you are short, find dresses and pants that lengthen you. Horizontal stripes are slimming and elongate your frame. If you are tall and thin, you literally are my dream body. You can wear horizontal and vertical stripes. The trick is finding pants that match your height but there is nothing a little tailoring can’t help. Find a tailor that can let the seams out of the pants and sleeves to add more inches. If you are plus, don’t put on tents and large items but find clothes that accentuate your waist, bust or gorgeous legs (pick one body part to accentuate at a time). A peplum shirt is the go-to for curvier girls and a belt can fix almost anything. So, find things that compliment you and your shape and rock it with boldness!

So, what has been your biggest style challenge since having a baby or becoming pregnant? Have you found it hard to get your groove back when it comes to styling your new body? Let us know how you’ve been dealing with your body and styling issues and if you have any questions, please comment below and I will answer them.

“Dress how you want to be addressed”

So, I love a gorgeous, well-dressed woman. Yes, I am that chick that stares at other pretty girls from across the room. I’m always envying someone’s bag, dress or shoes….sigh, who else is like me? It’s not jealousy, just admiration. Well, I have a blog and now I can have those gorgeously dressed women on my blog and give them the credit they deserve while stealing all their looks as well…(bahahahaha). Today, I am profiling the ever gorgeous, long-legged, stylish Courtney Pettway. This girl can dress y’all, and for all my tall girls, this is for you. So, here she goes….

We have all heard that saying, and it’s one that I live by. I truly believe that it is possible to dress fashionably and make a statement without breaking the bank. Majority of these looks didn’t even cost me more than 50 bucks! My fashion tip: don’t always go by the ‘brand’; just because it may hold a popular brand name does not mean it’s quality and just because it’s not a popular ‘brand’ doesn’t mean that the quality is cheap! So whether you are shopping at Nordstrom, a high-end boutique, Goodwill, or other second-hand store, go for quality pieces at a reasonable price (within YOUR budget).

One of my favorite go-to pieces are blazers. Why? Because you can wear them with literally anything, anywhere, and anytime of day. I found these awesome, pink high-waisted pants BRAND NEW and tagged at $100.00… Did I pay that? Absolutely not lol. I purchased them from a local thrift store in Louisville, had them tailored (making MY total a whopping $15 ) paired them with a patterned blazer (which I caught on sale), with black heels, and a black fitted tank.

Pants: Goodwill

Blazer: Banana Republic

Tank: Ross

Heels: Just Fab

Purse: Steve Madden

Perfect for a casual date night (nothing fancy). I love off the shoulder EVERYTHING, so when I saw this shirt I immediately grabbed it. I paired this with a forest green mini skirt, camel-colored sandals , my other favorite accessory (aviators) and one of my favorite bags.

Shirt: Ross

Skirt: Target

Shoes : Jessica Simpson

Bag: Michael Kors

I received soooo many compliments on this jumper at a recent wedding. I immediately fell in love with it and could NOT wait to wear it!

Jumper: HHHGluxe

Pink crossbody: Ross

Neutral Heels: BCBG

Did I tell you that I love bold colors and patterns? Oh, and here is yet another blazer lol.

Blazer: Thrift store

Tank: Ross

Shorts: Calvin Klein (From Platos)

Strappy sandals: Just Fab

So I was told yellow is my color, and I would have to agree! This was a perfect summer look!

Shirt: Ross

Shorts: Forever21

Sandals & Fringe crossbody: Ross (Do you see a pattern? Haha. Ross is definitely one of my favorite stores).

My other favorite accessory is..hats. Whether it’s a wide brim, fedora, snapback or fitted cap, I will rock them all and pair them with just about everything.

Fedora: Amazon

Shirt: Boohoo

Skinny Jeans: Missguided

Sandals: Target

Ironically, these looks are not only inexpensive, but most of the pieces are also several years old! This just goes to show you that it is possible to buy quality pieces that are not only budget friendly, but will last throughout ever-changing fashion trends!

Eclipsed!

“Honey, you are like a solar eclipse…rare, beautiful and magnificent to look at.”

How many of you guys actually got to see the solar eclipse today? I know my sister had everyone in the continental United States looking for glasses for her children. The next total eclipse won’t be until April 2024…by then i’ll be “yadayadayada” years old. LOL! I got to look at it today because some wonderful Wal-mart workers let me borrow their solar eclipse glasses. It was a sight to behold. I almost was in tears thinking about the beauty of God’s creation. I don’t know about you, but things like these make me realize how small me and my problems are and how big God is (HE IS HUGE)! So, let me know how looking at the solar eclipse made you feel and your thoughts about it.

Now on to fashion…are y’all gearing up for fall fashion yet. I’m working on some great looks of the fall, but since we live in the South, summer is still on and popping. This look is ruffled, floral, fun and full of food. All my favorite F’s. I found this gorgeous Gianni Bini dress at the “Ghetto Dillards” and I knew it would be perfect for a special occasion.

I actually wore it to the grand opening of the new Fresh Anointing building in Montgomery, AL and I received a lot of compliments on it. I love dresses that are easy to wear and this is one of them. I paired it with my off-brand Azzedine Alaia heels and one of my favorite MK bags. If you live in Montgomery, stop by the Dillard’s outlet and dig for this dress, you won’t be disappointed. My dress is no longer available, but I found this gorgeous one on Amazon UNDER 30.00 (small cheers and claps)

FYI: the wonderful food is from Vecchia Restaurant in Birmingham AL. The food is delicious; check them out when you get a chance.

FYI: thanks to all of you who take time out to your day to support House of Odara. I truly appreciate all your likes, shares, comments and love…it is deeply felt and it keeps me going.
