Flower.Power

“A flower does not think about competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms”

Who doesn’t love a bouquet of flowers sent to their home, job or school? *NOT ME* I’m just not a real flower person; i’ll take faux flowers any day. Those little things die so quickly and end up smelling really bad. If you want to surprise me, Chanel will do. The only flowers I want are the fake one I don’t have to water or bother with at all. That’s why I love this floral look I’m blogging today…it’s full of fake flowers. LOL! It’s a simple shift dress with cut out shoulders and a floral headband. It’s a fun look and perfect for a day out on the town or a fun brunch with your girlfriends.

Shift dresses are perfect for the summer and mine is no exception. It’s super lightweight, not clingy and easy to wear. I’ve had it belted before when I wanted to make it more of a “going out” dress, but for a day date or brunch, it’s perfect unbelted. I paired it with a pair of blue Steve Madden platform heels, my floral headband, and one of my favorite Michael Kors powder-blue quilted Sloan bag. My dress is no longer available but I found an awesome one under $20.00 on Amazon.

I love the simplicity of this look. Anything I can wear that allows me to eat and not have to suck in my stomach is my best friend. My MK bag is under $200 and a great buy; I wear it a lot and the sheen on it is gorgeous. I also love these thick STURDY heels. Overall, this look is just fun and comfortable!

Let me know what you think about this look and let’s chat about handbags. Michael Kors is in the process of buying Jimmy Choo for 1.2 Billion, what are your thoughts on that. They are two such different brands; I am looking forward to seeing how they will work together as a team. Splashed!

Design creates culture. Culture shapes values. Values determine the future -R. Peters

I am secretly obsessed with creative minds. As a child, I would always make up stories to help me wash dishes or to help me cope with bullying or just to make the time go by. I had this imaginary life inside my mind that kept me sane. So, I grew up loving movies, story-telling, books, fashion and design. Pretty much anything aesthetically pleasing, I was drawn to immediately. How many of you are like that?

My goal, and the goal of House of Odara is to first motivate, next bring affordable fashion, also highlight fashionable people and finally spotlight designers and their visions. Today, this post is about this brand I stumbled on to called Splashed by DKGThe designers are actually my upstairs neighbors and the CEO’s of Magic City Fashion Week. Derek and Daniel design, sew and splash all their pieces themselves. I fell in love with their dream, work ethic and of course the designs themselves.

Today, I’m styling their tiered top (NOW ON SALE). This top fits just about anyone, from petite to plus size so check out their page and shop away. I paired this gorgeous top with a chocker from their collection, a red wrap skirt, tortoise shelled sunnies and strappy blue heels. I absolutely loved this shirt, it was comfortable, flattering and the color is just amazing. Let’s support local businesses that are doing.

I absolutely love the splashed design of the shirt, the off shoulder look, the light weight feel of the cotton and of course the compliments I received while wearing it. The shirt would also go well with white-washed jeans or tights. The beauty of style is that you get to make things your own. So, go shop and style it your own way.

Let me know what you think of this look and how you would have styled it differently. Check out the site Splashed by DKG  for the top and other fabulous items. Don’t forget to comment, subscribe and share this site. For collaborations with your brand, email me at Houseofodarablog@gmail.com

Magic City Fashion Week

“Sometimes God is working things out for us and we don’t even know it”

A year after moving to Birmingham AL, and getting knocked ALL the way up, I met these two awesome guys named Derek and Daniel. Not only were they designers, but they had this vision for the beautiful city that is now my home.  After going to an event they put together to talk about this new venture they were pursuing, I knew I had to be a part of it.

Enter the dream child of these two hardworking men…Magic City Fashion Week . Derek and Daniel’s dream of turning the great city of Birmingham into a mecca for fashion and design is something the we have needed for a long time. They are building a platform for voices that would otherwise not be heard.

Yesterday, they had an amazing event for fashion bloggers and photographers at Blue Monkey in Birmingham with the fabulous Victoria of Vic Styles as our blogging guru. This beautiful girl sat for two hours and answered every question we threw at her. She was an open book. You know sometimes you meet successful people and they are so closed-mouthed about how they became successful and don’t really want to share their journey with you….Victoria was not like that at all, she was amazing. The ambience was gorgeous, the people friendly and engaging and the knowledge she dropped was priceless. If you live in Birmingham or around Birmingham, come and be a part of this amazing team that we are building.

Magic City Fashion Week will have actual fashion events and shows happening October 24-28, 2017 during classic weekend. If you are an emerging makeup artist, designer, business owner, blogger, fashion lover, etc. please visit the site: Magic City Fashion Week  and sign up for updates.

Like I said, the event last night was eye opening. Victoria talked about site optimization, learning to trust your journey, finding your niche in the city you are in, putting together highlight reels and branding. It was so beautiful to see women encouraging and helping each other achieve their dreams and goals. Our city wins when we all come and grind TOGETHER.

If you went to the event, comment below about what you gained from it. If you want to be a part of what’s happening click this link and sign up and join the team, you won’t be disappointed.

Steps=Success

“Nothing great in life is ever comes easy and nothing easy is ever great”

Success doesn’t come with an escalator…that would be too easy. Success comes with a deep, dark, dank staircase that seems to never end. Your level of commitment to climbing these steps will be your level of greatness in whatever you are trying to achieve. For example, school begins this month, and as you know, passing your classes and doing well depends entirely on you. For those who work every day, most of the time, your promotions and raises depend on your level of hard work and determination. There is nothing God, determination and hard work cannot accomplish. Remember, you are destined for greatness, you cannot lose. Keep persevering, keep climbing…don’t look at the others whizzing quickly past you. Your journey is your own. Keep moving.

As a blogger, mother, and wife, I see others doing so well in their area of expertise and it keeps me down and it makes me want to quit. But, I have to remember, they put in work to be where they are now. They didn’t just arrive at 100K followers, they didn’t just raise amazing kids, they didn’t just have that “Perfect” marriage…IT TOOK WORK. It takes work people. I’m writing about this subject because it’s something i’ve been dealing with lately a lot. I remember shooting this look and second guessing everything about myself…Sometimes, we are our own biggest critics, when we should be our own biggest cheerleaders. When the steps get steep and your legs want to give out on you, don’t come down on yourself, but celebrate how far you’ve come and encourage yourself to keep going.

Y’all, I didn’t mean to preach! LOL. Let’s get into this look. So, I was in Eastdale Mall in Montgomery, AL (on my way to Ghetto Dillards) when I stumbled onto this THOT shop called Pink Clove. You know the boutiques that only sell club wear…yea, that one. But, they had this jewel hanging in the window and God knows, It was whispering, “come here Emma, come buy me!”

How could I resist a talking shirt. It took me two weeks but the next time I was down there, I brought it home. I paired it with this Elizabeth Taylor skirt i’ve had for ages (Tip: Always have a couple of expensive, quality items in your closet that can be staple pieces…these will outlast 100’s of inexpensive pieces). I added my pink Selma Michael Kors bag and some light pink heels from Forever21 (No, those are not Azzedine Alaias).

If you are in Montgomery, check out the store Pink Clove for my exact shirt. However, this shirt from Boohoo is under 40 and there is a 50% off sale going on NOW on the site.

Ghagerian

Have you ever wanted to be someone else?! (*slowly raises hands*)

I think we’ve all, once and maybe even now, desired to shed our skin and be someone prettier, lighter, stronger, taller, thicker, darker, etc. I remember when my sister and I moved from Africa when I was eight years old. I just wanted to be an American. I wanted to talk normal, I didn’t want to take pounded yams and peanut stew to school. The kids used to make fun of me and my sister for our hair, our clothes and especially our “stinky” food. I remember praying and asking God to make me someone different. The beautiful thing was He did, but not in the way I wanted. I never got lighter, I never got taller and I never got the Cindy Crawford legs and shape but I got ME.

The moment I learned to be Happy with my Ghanian and African heritage, my short stubby legs and my coarse hair and dark skin, I became happier. I was made beautiful the way He wanted me to be and my imperfections just added to my charm. No matter how you see yourself, remember, You are gorgeous, you are amazing and He made you beautiful the just the way you are.

This look is based on my Ghanian/Nigerian heritage. I am Ghagerian. I shot this look in beautiful Birmingham at Steel City Pops in Homewood. If you live in Birmingham or get a chance to come up here, try them out. I always get the Avocado pop because it’s dairy free and delicious. So, I styled a jumpsuit my mother brought back for me from Ghana with a gold choker from boohoo, a pair of velvet Gianni Bini heels and a brown faux leather bag.

Let me know what you think about this Ankara look. Since this outfit is from Africa, I am going to link some of my fav ankara looks I have found online. Also, have you ever dealt with image issues and how did you overcome them? I love hearing from you guys so comment below.

As you can see, I couldn’t resist buying a pop while I was there. LOL. Click on pictures for links to purchase this look:

Konnichiwa

Konnichiwa Friends…

or better yet, Good day. It’s FRIYAY and the weekend begins. I am keeping this post really short and simple because this outfit is just that, sweet and simple. I found this gorgeous “Japanese” inspired kimono on my favorite site Amazon and I dreamed about it until I finally saved up my coins to purchase it on Prime Day. I’m thinking about doing video reviews of the items I get from Amazon and other sites, what do you guy think about that?!

So, the Kimono came in two days (Prime) and it was perfection. FYI Amazon prime is offering 30 day free trials for those who want to take advantage of two day shipping and free shipping and handling. Click Here for the offer. The robe/kimono was silky, belted and the color was amazing. I actually hosted one of my friends plays in this very outfit. I got so many compliments and inquiries about the kimono that I decided I had to blog it. The beauty of this piece is that it’s so in season right now. Celebrities have been wearing the kimono/trench look all summer long. Beyonce’s Gucci kimono cost a whopping $21,945….I found mine on Amazon for less than $25.00

So these stars may have spent a fortune on their Kimonos, but you can get the same floral look for WAY LESS.

I paired this look with some simple distressed light jeans, a yellow Giani Binni blouse, Amazon gladiator heeled sandals and some gorgeous tassel earrings also from Amazon. CLICK ON PICTURES TO GO DIRECTLY TO THE SITE.

Let me know your thoughts on the whole kimono trend…whether you like it or not, and why. I love it because it’s so lightweight, I can wear it during the summer and also use it to cover up some too tight jeans and my juicy, juicy arms…lol!

These pics were taken at Aldridge Gardens in Hoover, AL. This place is absolutely gorgeous. You can look below for some pics from the spot!

Fuchsia.Passion

A strong and barely controllable emotion” is what webster defines as PASSION!

We all have once had a passion for something. Whether it was playing basketball, being an actor, being a doctor, being a lawyer, or being a singer, passion would keep us up at night and keep us dreaming during the day. Well, along the way, passion fizzles out. Life comes in and waters down the fire of passion and with time, we forget, we lose sight, and we move on. Now, it’s time to pick up those passions friends.

Remember, you don’t have to quit your life, your job, your day-to-day activities to pursue passion. You just have to find time to carve you a space for you and a space to pursue your passion. You can do it. Let me know what passions you have given up on and how you decide to pick it up and make those dreams a reality. The difference between dreams and reality is You. You make the dream work, so get out and work!

This look is my Fuchsia Passion. I found this gorgeous dress at the Ghetto Dillards (Dillard’s Outlet in Eastdale Mall). Being a new mommy, my arms are just not where I want them to be so I paired the dress with a stripped off-shoulder blouse, a folded faux-leather bag and black and white heels. This look is perfect for that special occasion. I have linked sites where you can buy that perfect evening outfit so check them out and tag me on IG: Oluwafunmifly  or FB: Houseofodara if you recreate this look. Don’t forget to comment and let me know what you think. Also, let me know what other looks you want to see and ask any questions you may have.

Hey Girl Hey: Back to School

Hey Girl Hey! It’s that time of year again…BACK TO SCHOOL! As a mother I am so excited that summer is almost officially over! This means I no longer have to think of one hundred ways of how to entertain my kid. I have a six year old daughter and let’s be real, the girl has high standards!

The transition from summer break ending to going back to school is sometimes challenging. So let’s start getting them in the routine of going to bed early and waking up early. By doing this they will be prepared and ready for the first day of school. I’m still a kid at heart so I’m excited as if, it’s my first day. I can’t wait to lay out her uniform, label her supplies, pack her book bag, and send her off. Teachers be ready….these are now your kids, we truly appreciate you all!

Now, that we have gotten the kids out of the way. It’s time to talk to the mothers, as moms we have countless duties. So much so, that we get caught in the commotion of prepping the kids that we barely set aside any time for ourselves. I know, you’re like “how do you expect me to set time out for myself in the morning girl?”

Girl! I’m glad you asked. Here are some thoughtful easy ways to make sure that not only your kid(s) look and feel awesome but so do you. Let’s face it, kids love when their moms look good, it makes them proud. Whether they say it or not. Trust me. My daughter evaluates my work attire every morning, she usually says that I either look like her grandma, a principal or like I’m going to church. And guess what? All of those are fine by me.

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”

  1. Attempt to get a good night’s rest. Emphasis on attempt, 6-8 hours will do your body good and you will wake up refresh and energized.
  2. Wake up early and have some personal time. This puts an end to rushing. It also allows more time for you pray, do your hair, makeup and take a selfie!
  3. Set out your clothes the night before. Doing this cuts out wasting time in the closet trying to put together an outfit in the morning.
  4. Create an after school schedule for your children. Studies show that kids actually like routines. Make it fun for them.
  5. Remember you are human! You’re not perfect and you make mistakes. Take care of yourself because all children deserve happy parents.

Comment below and let us know some of the things you do to get yourself and your family ready for the back to school season. As always, thank you for reading and sharing this blog.

Look in the sky…is a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s WonderMom!

As I am typing this, my son is screaming to the top of his lungs because for some insane reason, he is obsessed with my computer keyboard and I won’t let him play with it. “Everyday I hads to fight, I love Sammy, but i’ll beat him b’fo I lets him lay a hand on my Mac” (color purple reference). LOL! But for real, I am multi-tasking like crazy these days.

Being a mom is rewarding, but as many of you know, it comes with it’s challenges, long nights, longer days and headaches. Sometimes I wish there were two of me so that I could get more done. It’s easy to feel like you’re not doing enough, but as long as your baby is happy and healthy, you are doing FANTASTIC. Say that to yourself out loud because I just did.

I AM ENOUGH! I AM A FANTASTIC MOM! I AM WONDERMOM!

Say it out loud again…that felt great right?! We always have to say the opposite of what we feel in that moment. Speak good things over yourself, and over your child and you will receive good things. *insert praying hands*

This weeks look is all about caped dresses. I had a friend ask me the other day were they still in fashion and I looked at her and said, “anything that hides my stomach will always be in fashion”. I love them because it adds a bit of drama to a boring old shift dress and it can also help “camouflage” those problems areas such as big hips, wider waist lines and that stubborn tummy.

Also, if you are pregnant and looking for the perfect shower outfit, they are perfect.

Kim K wore these a lot while she was pregnant and she always managed to look chic and comfortable. Now, I can’t afford her designers, but I will definitely list a couple of great shift dresses I have found that work great for that girl on a budget. I found my gorgeous caped Gianni Bini Dress (size 8) and I paired it with a black embroidered bag and some Betsey Johnson stilettos.

So, what are your thoughts on the whole caped look, would you ever wear this style and have you ever worn this style? Comment below and let me know and check out the links to some affordable fashions down below. FYI in the middle of the shoot, Sammy threw up all over my dress. That’s the large stain at the bottom of my gorgeous dress in the last picture. *deepsigh*

Hello Prime Day!

Hope you all had a great and successful week so far. Okay, so did you read my last post on Amazon Prime Day and did you do any damage to their sale and your debit card? If you didn’t, click HERE to read it and shop away! Comment below and let me know what your purchased or if you sat this one out. You can also always chat with me on IG: Oluwafunmifly or Facebook: House of Odara.

Okay, I have a really simple look for this week.  I found these bomb jeans on this great site called boohoo. Let me tell you about my new best friend… Guys, these jeans are the BEST. They stretch to the GAWDS. Okay thick girls, you know that feeling after Chipotle, and you have to suck your stomach in all the way to the car, and as soon as you get there, you pull the jeans down under your tummy so that you can make it home?!  These jeans stretch with your food baby, LOL!. You guys know I had a baby 8 months ago and unlike Kim K and Blac Chyna, I still have 80% of my baby weight to lose. So, I love anything with stretch and anything that is very comfortable. I’ve had them for a while and the pearls haven’t fell off and the color hasn’t faded. I bought a medium or 8/10…they shipped quickly and they were extremely cheap (SALE). Boohoo is always having sales so check them out. The link for the look will be listed below the pictures.

I paired these bomb jeans with a white high low shirt and a jean sleeveless jacket. I’m not linking a jean jacket because I would love to see what jackets you put with the jeans. Tag me in it on FB or IG for a repost. Remember, Style is all about finding what works for you. So, take some time out, grab a mirror and play dress up (you’re never too old or too young). I kept my accessories simple with pearl earrings and a cream and gold choker. I have linked another shirt on Amazon that I have already purchased in red. It was a great buy. I was 5 months postpartum and boy did that shirt hide all my flaws. This look is so simple and great for a night out with the girls, or a day at the office (if your office allows jeans during the week). The look was completed with my go-to-shoes for the summer that I found on Amazon. I wore them on my last post and these are a great buy because they go with everything…literally everything. Like I said before, purchase inserts for them because your feet do slide without them.

Okay, let me know if you recreate this look. Tag me on IG: oluwafunmifly or FB: Emma Searcy Ford and let me know. FYI BOOHOO IS HAVING 60% OFF MEN, WOMEN AND KIDS CLOTHES: CODE IS 60ALL!
