Plaids Permitted: Falls Plaid Trend

“Plaids were a thing before they became ‘a thing’…”

Okay Instagram, we get it, Plaids are BAE right now. You know they say nothing in life is ever new, just recycled. Well, If you’re older than 25, you know that plaids have been a thing for a while, but now, they are making a resurgence. This post is all about how to wear Fall’s Plaid Trend like a Pro!

How to wear Fall's Plaid Trend Like a pro

Blake Lively just killed this trend last week. She wore a Ralph Lauren 2017 Fall menswear suit and layered plaid on plaid on plaid. She broke the look up with a maroon tie, brown Michael Kors alligator satchel and burgundy lace-up boots. I love the way she wore this fall plaid trend and I can’t wait to replicate it in my own way. First tip: one way to style this fall plaid trend is add bold or rich color to add some depth to it. Anything in the red family is always a hit with plaid.

Second Tip: when styling this fall plaid trend you can alway just wear one plaid piece over a simple dress, jumpsuit or skirt. I recently wore a Ralph Lauren plaid jacket over a pair of black tights and a graphic tee. It was simple, easy to wear but very on-trend.

Now, on to how Blake and I were on the same fashion wave length last week. I recently bought a plaid dress from Shein and knew I wanted to do layer it with my plaid jacket. I broke the look up with a black vintage velvet belt and of course a bright red H&M bag.

I finished the look off with some old silver Sam Edelman booties that are so comfortable that I can literally run in them. This Fall’s plaid trend is one that anyone can pull off and look chic while doing it.

This monochromatic look takes me back to my last Fall look on the blog called Sky-High-Thigh-Highs. I styled a black and white look with my favorite boots of all times, you can read and shop the look HERE. Remember with the plaid look, you can either keep it simple with one plaid piece or layer it with plaid on plaid but remember to always add a pop of color to help break up the look and add flavor to it. So, get in your closet and recreate this fall plaid trend. Happy Styling babes.

SKY-HIGH-THIGH-HIGH BOOTS

“Thigh-highs are like gloves for the legs…they keep them nice and cozy”

How do you wear sky-high-thigh-high boots without looking like you’re on your way to your night job as a featured dancer?! hahaha! Well, let me tell you how in this wonderful piece i’m calling sky-high-thigh-highs. Thigh-high boots are not only a great fall trend, but they are functional and actually serve a purpose. I love them because when I wear a short skirt, dress or shorts in the fall, they keep my legs warm and give me some modesty. Growing up with a Nigerian mum, having your legs, thighs or décolletage out was the mortal sin (Chai, hell fire awaits you daughter).

Do not be afraid of the thigh high trend. It’s actually a fun and sexy way to be both warm and fashionable. The problem a lot of us thicker-legged women run into is that sky-high-thigh-high boots never fit over our calf muscles and juicy juicy yams. Well that is why the Lycra boot is going to be your BFF.

Studded Faux Leather Jacket

These red sky-high-thigh-high boots have been so popular because not only do they stretch to the GAWDS, but they come in some really beautiful colors. I’ve never found boots that zip all the way up and cover my whole dark-meat legs. But, these ones just slid right on up with ease and they actually feel good on your bare legs. If you don’t have a pair of lycra boots in your shoe arsenal….GET YOU SOME BOO!!!!

Now that you see how I rocked my sky-high-thigh-high lycra boots, how would you have worn them. Let me know what you think about this trend, if you would ever be caught dead in thigh-high boots or if you already own several of them. Like I said, for my thick girls, stretch thigh-high boots are going to be your best friend all season long so invest in a good pair of them. Embracing Jealousy

“I hate you, I hate you, I don’t know you and I hate you!”

Today, I’m going to tell you a story about how embracing jealousy changed my life! LOL…Don’t close the page, give me a chance to explain this to you. I don’t know how many of you ever watched “The Chappelle Show” back in early 2000’s. I was obsessed with it, even though it was a bit grown-up for me at that time. The Chappelle show was truth wrapped in a comedic shell and this formula made it very successful.

embracing jealousy: how to make it work for your goodMy favorite episode was the Player Hater’s Ball. I literally died laughing at that episode but in the middle of all that laughter, I learned a lot about embracing jealousy and turning it into motivation and NOT anger. The episode was all about a group of men that were so filled with hate they got awards for hating on someone’s success, looks and personality. I find in today’s society, people think that being a hater and being jealous and petty is very chic and cool. FYI it’s not! Jealousy can be a bad thing but when you embrace it you can actually turn it into motivation.

So, no this post is not 101 ways to be a better hater…sorry!

Webster defines jealousy as a feeling of resentment because of someone else’s success, advantages, or because of a personal rivalry. LISTEN LINDA, WE ALL GET JEALOUS! Anyone that says they’ve never been jealous of someone else is lying. It’s okay to feel jealousy, it’s what you decide to do with it that makes the difference.

Here are 5 ways I learned to embrace jealousy and make it work for my good.

  1. Compliment Your Rival: When it’s 10PM and you’re scrolling on social media and you see your friend is engaged, having a baby or got a promotion, don’t scroll by and roll your eyes, compliment them. Even if you don’t feel it, do it. Blessings come when we learn to rejoice with other people!
  2. Smell Yourself: My mum used to say if you travel and everywhere you go stinks, check your self because it might be you smelling. When jealousy creeps up, it’s because in some way or another we feel inadequate. We may be having a low self-esteem day and going online can sometimes make things worse. When insecurity creeps in, ask yourself “why do I feel this way and what can I do to build myself back up” Listen, when your self-esteem is low, log offline and get with a group of people that can uplift, pray and compliment you.
  3. Let it Push You: There is nothing like jealousy to motivate you to do better. I remember seeing my friend that had a baby a month after me, and she was back in a size 6. I was sooooo mad at her and at myself and at my body but instead of taking it out on her and letting jealousy eat me up, I decided to embrace jealousy and let it push me to exercise. Embracing jealousy can turn “hateration” into greatness.
  4. Talk It Out: Sometimes you just gotta talk it out with a friend. When you’re feeling inadequate and jealous of just about everyone and everything they have and you don’t have, get advice from your pastor, get prayer from a friend or grab a glass of wine and chat it out with girlfriends. Nothing soothes like being able to work things out with people you trust
  5. Love is Greater: Love conquers all things. So, if hate is creeping up on you, say no and choose love. Dr. Seidman wrote a great article on jealousy in a relationship setting entitled, ‘What’s really behind Jealousy and what to do about it” and if you and your spouse are dealing with this issue, read the article HERE

embracing jealousy: how to make it work for you

Remember, embracing jealousy is not always a bad thing when you learn to make it work for your good. Next time the green-eyed monster creeps up on you, remember these 5 steps and allow love to win.

Mix-It-Up

“I love a woman that knows how to mix prints like a BAWSE!”

Have you ever tried to mix prints, pattern and textures and just given up because it was too hard? This blog post is just for you. We will be talking about how to mix prints, and textures without looking like a clown. You may not be a fan of this trend, but it is here to stay and will definitely have you looking like a style pro…so give it a try and mix it up. Here are my 5 go-to rules on how to mix prints like a BOSS:

  1. Find prints with one or two common colors
  2. Find a pattern that super busy and one that is a little less busy
  3. Find items with a common background color: either light or dark background
  4. Pastel prints mixed together is an easy go-to look
  5. stripes and florals or stripes and stripes are always a YES

In these pictures you’ll see celebrities from Solange to Blake Lively slaying and showing us how to wear mixed prints. All of them follow these simple five rules and they come out looking like they stepped right out of the pages of Vogue magazine (fyi: some of them probably did). This trend is not hard. I want you to give it a try and see how fun playing with prints can really be.

My look today is a nod to the mixed print trend. I paired a printed peplum blouse with a textured bottom and ended up with this amazing and chic look. My shirt is going to be in my collection ShakaraFAB that will be available next summer for purchase. The pants are from Dillards, the shoes Amazon, and everything else will be down at the bottom for purchase.

Issa.Celebration

“Every day is a celebration when you have the right bag”

Today on the blog, I am showing you how to style a floor-length wrap dress with a plunging neckline and a colorful-textured bag. I received this bag to style for a local business owner and entrepreneur and I fell in love with it as soon as I received it. The bag is PHENOMENAL! it’s heavy, well-made and a topic starter. It definitely makes a statement no matter how and where you wear it.

Let’s begin with this beautiful plunging neckline dress. It’s a Gianni Bini wrap dress that is a little too long for me but the color was too rich to pass up. I began by layering the dress with a gold, jewel-encrusted undershirt and finished it some sky-high, ankle-strap heels. I don’t know about you, but I’m not really a plunging-neckline type of girl so I always layer to hide my décolletage. One tip when layering an outfit is put a shirt underneath that has a pattern or is jewel-encrusted or has texture to it. It just adds a little something extra to the look. For my petite girls, a sky-high heel and a long dress with a slit is your best friend; it helps elongate your frame. Another tip: if your dress has a split, find a pair of sexy heels and let them legs show!

I love how there are little accents of gold from my bag to my shoe to my undershirt.

Now, Let’s talk about how to style this colorful bag. I recently did a post on Adachicdesigns and you can read all about it HERE! This bag is one of my favorite bags i’ve styled so far because it makes a statement all by itself. I love this colorful piece because I don’t have to do much to make it stand out. Last tip, when styling a colorful bag, try and keep everything else simple, unless of course you love styling different prints and textures. You can pair this bag with a little black dress or to be more edgy, pair it with a patterned dress. Check out the site www.adachicdesigns.com to purchase your own special bag.

Fringetober

Is it me or did this year go by like cash in your wallet?

It’s a new month and we have a little over two months before 2018. Ya’ll, I feel like I was just dancing in the new year and now it’s almost over and I actually haven’t even finished all my “New Years Goals” list. Jesus help me. Oh, well…I still have this month and November and December to get things done. But, let’s move on to this October-worthy dress.

This post is all about one of my favorite fall trends…FRINGE. I love this trend because it is just so fun. I’m all about a dress that moves and gives dimension from every angle. You can’t help but have all eyes on you when you walk into a room dripping with fringe-goodness. When I shot this look in Birmingham, I had so many men and women stop me to ask me where I got the dress from. Well, you guys have the inside scoop. This dress is just $54.99 (yells into pillow).

This dress is so amazing and the sheen and shimmer is perfect for a night out on the town or a special event. I added a t-strap Gianni Bini heels and a simple gold clutch. I let the dress pave the way and kept everything else simple. FYI, this dress also comes as a jumpsuit too (it’s already in my Amazon cart).

So, who else is fearless enough to give this fun dress a try?! Let me know if you order it and tag House of Odara when you wear it. Find on Instagram: Oluwafunmifly and go like my Facebook page: House of Odara.
